We have a comfortable King bedroom that was quiet ,clean and beautifully decorated. Hotel has been redone so all rooms are updated and there is free wifi, parking and a simple continental breakfast. Stuff is super friendly and knowledgeable about the wineries, sights and restaurants in the area. Enjoyed the lobby one evening chatting with Michael stationed at the front... More

A step back in time to the 1860s gold rush era, only with free wi-fi and heated bathroom floors. Classic historic hotel, beautifully restored with every detail from pressed tin ceilings to period artwork. Furnishings are consistent with the time period in style, but everything is brand new. Giant fluffy comforters and thick snuggly robes enticingly await in your room.... More

I love historic hotels. I kind of expect some flaws here and there in a building that's been around for a hundred and sixty-six years, but that is not the case with the National Hotel! I don't know that I've ever stayed anywhere that everything was so perfect. The room was absolutely beautiful. With it's antique King size bed, fluffy... More

Found ourselves in the area on a Wed. in January. The restaurants we were familiar with were all closed on that evening. We went into the bar of The National Hotel for a cocktail and found a very lively scene. The cocktail waitress was very helpful and pleasant. We decided to try the dining room. Good choice! My husband and... More

Went on a Monday, a week before Christmas, to do some skiing in Kirkwood the next day (didn't want to fight the crowds!). The place was beautiful! Unfortunately, the bar and restaurant are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so we didn't get to sample their fare. Just my luck! Anyway, Melanie is very helpful and extraordinarily nice. She offered my... More

Although my husband and I only stayed here on one Sunday night, we were very impressed with the very accommodating staff and the hotel's beautiful renovation of the lobby, breakfast room and our very clean king room -- #404. The furniture is perfect for the "gold rush town" location and the many framed historic photographs, prints and other items on... More

We have stayed numerous times even though we live not too far. The rooms and amenities are wonderful. The restaurant and bar and great. The location is a good spot to home base from. The owner is wonderful man who has painstakingly restored this hotel to be The Gem of the Foothills.

Come in! This rich man Lukowitz made money n came back to where he grew up to make something good. He renovated this classic western hotel on the creek. Great restaurant, great hotel, beautiful old California town on rout 88, one of California greatest driveway across the Sierra Nevada to Lake Tahoe. Heck they gave me a free glass of... More

I decided to stay here based on other great reviews and lower rates than other hotels in the area. The National did not disappoint. We arrived around 11:30 after a 6 hour drive and Noah was happy to accommodate us with an early check in. The rooms are small (this hotel is 163 years old. Huge rooms weren't a necessity... More

After we sold our house, we spent the first two nights here. Desk clerks were helpful. Rooms are small, suites are larger. Attention to detail and respectful of history of the area. Several rooms (including one we were in) are supposedly "haunted". Close to downtown shops and activities.
