The pittoresk village of Veenhuizen is absolutely worthwile a visit. Started as 'recorrection unit' early 1900's and later transformed to a prison village, located in a beautifull nature surrounding. The buildings are all of the same area, so architecture is consisent and preserverd in this 'to become' Unesco Site. The hotel is located in the former hospital buildings and connected... More

For nearly two ages Veenhuizen was a far away place to be re-socialised or to be prisoned. As you can see in the Museum or by reading books. Nowadays you can recover from your daily life as a free burgher. Free from the prison you call home or work. in Bitter en Zoet you find a room in the old... More

We had a business meeting (couple of days in the green with a team) at Bitter en Zoet. It is a converted former prison hospital and three houses belonging to senior staff of that hospital, the conversion is very tastefully done by a glass construction connecting the three houses. Venue is very suited for days in the green, quiet in... More

The location is perfect to have the feeling the world is far away. Veenhuizen is very worth for a day hiking and relaxing. The quality of the food is excellent, the price is reasonable, the service fine. The rooms meet the requirements of this time. They are spacy but not overwhelmingly luxurious. The flatscreen tv is a bit small. Only... More

The hotel is located in a very quite area. It was originally the hospital for the local prison. The rooms are well maintained, but if you have room 5 or 6 you will find the stairs tiring when carrying your case up. Breakfast ok.

Last minute find, we were looking for accommodation near the TT track and this place came up at the last minute. We loved it.... Peaceful, quiet, and so interesting with the history of the place.... Even though the restaurant had closed ( we were late and didnt change our watches, we were still on UK time ) they went out... More

We booked this hotel for one night on 26th June. It was the only hotel available that we could find near Assen because the Dutch Moto GP was on that weekend. What a very lucky find! It had only been open for 2 months and was made up of three linked houses with another 2 still being renovated. It was... More
