An excellent place to stay, beautiful and very well kept. We were served an amazing 8 course Japanese taster menu, with everything explained by the English speaking staff. Really, the height of hospitality. Staff were very helpful with onward journey planning too.

We stayed two nights, walking to magome and back - a lovely day not too hot, sun all day. The room was large, lovely view of Japanese garden front and back. The staff are friendly and attend to anything you wish quickly and with humour. Other reviews rave about the food - we were not disappointed as can be with... More

We loved our big room with windows all around, enjoyed sitting on the balcony, dinner, breakfast, ... No private bathroom at all (not even a sink in the room) but for one night I don't mind too much. Loved it.

After hiking from Magome in surprising heat, we arrived at beautiful Tsumago and the ryokan Fujioto. The hosts were welcoming and helpful and spoken excellent English. The room had amazing views of their beautiful gardens. The highlight was the outstanding meals, both dinner and breakfast which were prepared lovingly using local ingredients and beautifully presented. Memorable stay.

We stayed here after walking from Magome (the best direction if you prefer more downhill than uphill). As people have stated, the rooms are basic, but were comfortable. We had a bath in the onsen and entirely enjoyed it. The staff and the meals were a highlight. Really interesting local food and lovingly presented. It was probably the best meal... More

It was one of our best Ryokan experiences in Japan so far. You pay a lot but from the friendly (and fluently english speaking) hosts but you'll get back a lot. Great rooms, nice house in the middle of the old town, fantastic gardens, superb food experience etc. At the end we even got a picture with us to remember... More

If you stay at only one ryokan in Japan, make it this one: it is a treasure! The delicious food served by Mrs Fujihara, is a real highlight. As someone who is a little ambivalent about Japanese food, I could so easily become a convert with Mrs Fujihara's cooking. She has a gift and works from five in the morning... More

We stayed in three ryokans while in Japan for two weeks, and the one night at Fujioto was the highlight. Read the reviews below; I'm reiterating what others have said. The kaiseki dinner was scrumptious. We stayed in a ryokan in Kyoto where they charged about $150 USD for our friend to come as a guest for dinner, and it... More

I stayed here with my boyfriend in April for a night. Ryokan Fujioto was a highlight of our trip to Japan. It's an incredible experience and alone is worth travelling to Tsumago for. The owner speaks over 4 languages including English (and really well). The owner became a friend to us over the one night. His attentiveness to his guests... More

This is a lovely ryokan located right along the main street in Tsumago. It is comfortable and quiet. But the best things about it are (1) the friendly, accommodating owners and staff, and (2) the food! We stayed two nights, and the two dinners rivaled any that we had in Japan. Our room had a lovely view over the koi... More
