We stayed here after walking from Magome (the best direction if you prefer more downhill than uphill). As people have stated, the rooms are basic, but were comfortable. We had a bath in the onsen and entirely enjoyed it. The staff and the meals were a highlight. Really interesting local food and lovingly presented. It was probably the best meal... More

It was one of our best Ryokan experiences in Japan so far. You pay a lot but from the friendly (and fluently english speaking) hosts but you'll get back a lot. Great rooms, nice house in the middle of the old town, fantastic gardens, superb food experience etc. At the end we even got a picture with us to remember... More

If you stay at only one ryokan in Japan, make it this one: it is a treasure! The delicious food served by Mrs Fujihara, is a real highlight. As someone who is a little ambivalent about Japanese food, I could so easily become a convert with Mrs Fujihara's cooking. She has a gift and works from five in the morning... More

We stayed in three ryokans while in Japan for two weeks, and the one night at Fujioto was the highlight. Read the reviews below; I'm reiterating what others have said. The kaiseki dinner was scrumptious. We stayed in a ryokan in Kyoto where they charged about $150 USD for our friend to come as a guest for dinner, and it... More

I stayed here with my boyfriend in April for a night. Ryokan Fujioto was a highlight of our trip to Japan. It's an incredible experience and alone is worth travelling to Tsumago for. The owner speaks over 4 languages including English (and really well). The owner became a friend to us over the one night. His attentiveness to his guests... More

This is a lovely ryokan located right along the main street in Tsumago. It is comfortable and quiet. But the best things about it are (1) the friendly, accommodating owners and staff, and (2) the food! We stayed two nights, and the two dinners rivaled any that we had in Japan. Our room had a lovely view over the koi... More

We spent one night here after walking from Magome. It is an absolutely beautiful old Ryokan with amazing service. The room was spacious and relaxing. The staff were attentive and knowledgeable. The dinner was fabulous - we're still talking about it! It's a taste of traditional Japan, and comes at a very reasonable cost. You'll need to book well in... More

In addition to the other stellar reviews on the hospitality, amazing food and truly traditional feel of the place, I'd like to add that the staff go beyond their call of duty to make you feel comfortable! I'd lost my contacts lens casing one night, and Mayu-san, one of the staff there reassured me. She suggested that i keep my... More

Stayed here as part of a self-guided walking tour, having walked over the pass from Magome. The ryokan is on the main street of this quiet, traditional village. The host speaks good English and was really helpful in showing us the basics and around the facilities of the inn. We had a large room at the front of the inn,... More

This was such a lovely place to stay! My husband and I hiked from Magome to Tsumgo in the rain with our packs. Fujioto was a great reward at the end of the hike. The room was clean, warm, and very comfortable. We stayed in the room that was off on its own above the kitchen and loved it! The... More
