We did not stay here as it was totally booked when we tried to book it a month previously. We recommend booking a few months in advance. However, by accident we stumbled in not realizing it was Ryokan Fujioto when looking for a place to rest our feet and have something to eat after the walk between towns. We were... More

I'd like to be selfish and keep this place to myself but that's not what Tripadvisor is about... We've traveled extensively and this place was quaint, clean, friendly and as everyone says... the food was amazing!! As a family of 4 (13, 17 yo) we had the most amazing time. We loved having to dress for dinner in our kimonos... More

Great location in middle of village. Heritage building beautifully kept. We visited on the coldest day so the corridors were freezing but the rooms were lovely and warm. Futons were the comfiest we've slept on. Food superb, best lightest tempura ever. The hosts English is excellent and he explained every dish in great detail, including order to eat dishes and... We loved this place. It was our first experience of a ryokan, and after walking part of the Nakasendo Way for 3 hours (Magome to Tsumago), we were so relieved that Fujioto lived up to our expectations! On arrival we were warmly met by our hosts and shown around the place before being taken to our room. The room itself... More

Set in the small town of Tsumago-juku, relatively untouched by the progression of time for the past 200 years, Ryokan Fujioto is the ideal place for rest in the midst of exploring the rustic surroundings. The hospitality given to us was excellent, cuisine served was authentic, delicate and delicious. The staff at Tsumago are friendly, able to converse very well... More

I have stayed in many ryokans prior to Fujioto and have plenty of experiences to share and evaluate ryokans base on the kaiseki set provides, the tatami rooms and the hospitality received in Japan. We were greeted by Mayuchan who speaks very good English upon arrival. Fujioto is located just minutes from Tsumago bus stop. Walk up a small little... More

Located about halfway on the main strip in Tsumago, my wife and I had a delight staying here. Mind you, this is a real Ryokan, not a converted hotel. It's got a real Onsen-type bath, and thin sliding doors, so you might hear some of your neighbors. However, this is a very special place. Everyone was unbelievably kind, the dinner... More

What a fantastic place. It is not a 5 star but then again the price is very reasonable while the dinner was 6 star! Very enjoyable visit with attentive multi generation family providing the service in all areas. I have stayed in quite a ryokans over the years and find this right at the top for value for money while... More

This ryokan is situated in the middle of the historic town of Tsumago. It's a small ryokan, probably no more than 6 to 8 rooms, and feels like a family home. The staff are helpful, and the evening meal is wonderous - all fresh local produce. The wagu beef was delicious and we were told that the animals are fed apples... More
