The architecture in the public areas is amazing. Go and see it; just have a meal or attend a play. The front door is locked, and you have to be buzzed in. We buzzed twice, but no one responded. Someone leaving the Club opened the door for us. The front desk person was busy with 2 other guests who were... More

I booked this hotel after getting a great deal on it and it worked out perfectly in terms of location as we arrived at SFO and were heading up to Sonoma for a wedding. We arrived at 2am due to delays at O'Hare and the car rental office, but were greeted by the friendly night deskman. Our room was cute... More

What a wonderful old club/hotel. It's like going back in time. Sort of like being in a dormitory in a prestigious school. Comfortable rooms. No TV. That's a plus!! Lovely indoor pool. "Secret" Garden Courtyard. Delicious help-yourself buffet breakfast with wonderful old tunes playing. Lots of interesting groups meeting day and night to peek in at. I will return!

After reading the reviews..I have to say let's be fair..people who are planning a wedding have some pretty crazy expectations. Let's separate the two adventures. We went as tourists only and loved the place. The architecture, the history, the breakfast, the scrabble board, the atrium. We were able to get a parking spot mid week no problem. Check in staff... Used the Living Social deal to take my wife away for Mother's Day and this place was awesome! Andrew and Sam at the front desk were more then accomadating. This place is historic and I reccomend that you walk the entire hotel when you first get here. Also, whether your a big pool junkie or not bring your swim trunks... More

This hotel was designed and built by Julia Morgan and they call it "the little castle". She is the archetict of Hearst Castle. This hotel was constructed to be a Ladies Club in the 20's. It still has members, however the place now is mostly a hotel. The area is right next to the Cal Berkely campus. It has the... More

Can't find the time or the money, you need not go far. The Berkely City Club is a great value and close the all parts of the Bay Area. Public transporation makes this one accessible location. Julia Morgan the first female architect in Califonria and this hotel is one of her designs. She also designed Hearst Castle. The staff was... More

Centrally located. In & out parking for $12. Great experience. Staff was wonderful; the building is beautiful, grand indoor swimming pool (open 5am-10pm). The breakfast buffet (which was included) served in the lovely restaurant. From our room views of the Golden Gate and San Francisco.

We were nonplussed by the discourteous staff at the Berkeley City Club on our first visit, but booked a second stay because the building itself is well located and the building itself has charm. It was a mistake--we couldn't have been more disappointed. One of two rollaways we paid extra for sagged atrociously in the middle when even our tiny... More

This is by far one of my favorite places to stay when I'm in the Bay Area. The architecture (designed by Julia Morgan!), the rooms (each with seemingly unique furniture and bedding), the view (ooooh, the view!) - all of it is fantastic, and for an affordable price. So far I've been lucky enough to find Groupon and Living Social... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Blending Romanesque and Moorish architecture, the Berkeley City Club was elaborately crafted by Hearst Castle designer Julia Morgan. Carved archways, vaulted ceilings, an indoor mosaic tiled swimming, and leaded-glass windows overlooking lush courtyards give the building its unique old world charm. The Berkeley City Club boasts six floors of classically designed standard, junior suite and suite size hotel rooms. Experience breathtaking views from each room, whether its the iconic fog rolling in over the San Francisco bay or the beautiful sunrises over the Berkeley Hills. Enjoy complimentary breakfast in the dining room, including fresh fruit, toast, bagels, pastries, hard-boiled eggs, oatmeal, yogurt, and juice. For entertainment, check out special member events, fitness classes, theater performances, salon services, lounge hours and dining in the restaurant, Julia's or visit local Berkeley attractions just steps away from the Club. ... more   less
