I had read reviews about how "no frills" these guest rooms are, but this went beyond "no frills" to "scuzzy and inconvenient." I never use the TV in my hotel rooms, anyway, and I was curious to do my lap swimming in this club's historic pool, so I booked myself one night here for a Berkeley business trip. Well, now... More

Dear EZGtraveler, Thank you very much for taking the time to review us. I am glad you were able to satisfy your curiosity to swim laps in our beautiful, historic pool. While the historic hotel does not meet everyone's needs and desires, we are sorry to hear you won't be returning but glad you were able to pull a few... More

This beautiful relic is a treasure, and what a treat to stay here when in Berkeley. As others have mentioned, it was designed by Julia Morgan, who also built Hearst Castle--it's a late-1920s structure whose influences are both Gothic Revival and Moderne. The rooms are comfy and charming--no TVs! Wifi works fine throughout. Windows have brass latches, are not screened,... More

This hotel was designed by Julia Morgan, who also designed Hearst Castle. It has thick walls of concrete and steel but looks like they plastered the interior to give it some warmth aong with rich deep colored wood. To me it evoked a Catholic church or college kind of feeling/look. The place is charming but you have to overlook a... More

Dear William F, Thank you most kindly for your review! The building is indeed stunning! Julia Morgan was so very talented with her work. The architecture that you noted that looked like wood is actually concrete. The only place that there is wood is in the Ballroom. It was done that way by design. Our fine dining restaurant, Julia's is... More

I have always been a lover of architecture, classic old buildings and antique furnishings. When I was younger I sought out opportunities to stay at historic properties, but somewhere along the way I became more appreciative of modern hotel amenities. On this particular trip, we booked only two weeks out, and available properties were scarce with prices very high for... More

Dear PWillard, Thank you so very much for your kind and thoughtful review! I am glad you and your daughter had the opportunity to stay with us. The courtyards are indeed stunning (there are 3 beautiful ones) and I think the variety of hot teas is a nice way for guests to unwind. We truly wish you all the best... More

My wife and I stayed at the Bekeley City Club so we could walk to the Greek Theatre for a Jimmy Buffett concert. The hotel is a masterpiece of historic proportions. The architect also designed Hearst Castle. There were at least four very large grand pianos in various rooms throughout the hotel. I sat at one of those pianos one... More

Lovely ambiance. 1930's architecture beautifully maintained. Room was quaint with excellent quality linens and towels - old fashioned tub with circular shower curtain; great water pressure and the heat pipes in the floor was toasty on bare feet. No TV in rooms - keeping with the era, but wife was available - not strong enough to stream a movie on... More

Almost hate to review this place as it feels like a secret to be cherished. It's like a pocket-sized Hearst castle. From my window I can see the Berkeley campus, I can hear the campus bells and the shouts of happy children in the playground across the street, and I am steps away from great theaters, fine restaurants, bookstores and... I think this hotel needs to be reviewed in context and not compared to newer accommodation available. Okay, the rooms don't have air conditioning but the building is nearly 100 years old; how can A/C be added unobtrusively without taking away from the building's character? I can understand how the rooms can be described as noisy, but when you know... More

Unique architecture greets you as soon as you enter this legacy of the 1st woman architect licensed in CA, Julia Morgan. However what grabbed me was the RESTFUL atmosphere with interior courtyards and little seating areas just perfect for reading and sipping tea/coffee. Heated indoor FAMOUS pool lives up to its reputation, little coffee/tea niche on 1st floor for whenever... More
