From an architectural point of view this hostelry is fascinating. We stayed for three nights. The rooms are small, super basic with few amenities. We were not concerned that there was no TV, radio, A/C or coffee maker. Sleeping on the 6th floor with the window's flung wide open was fine and the area had mostly quieted down by midnight.... We live on the other side of the Bay, but we had a lovely one-night getaway to the Berkeley City Club Hotel recently. Designed by architect Julia Morgan (who designed Hearst Castle), the hotel was finished in 1930 and has been lovingly preserved since then. The flower arrangements, furnishings, tapestries and rugs are gorgeous. Like stepping into a time machine.... More

I very much enjoyed my four night stay here. Think of it as the opposite of the big chain hotels. It is a club in an amazing building, a cross between Art Deco and neoGothic, California style: service secondary to atmosphere.

This spectacularly beautiful building was designed by Julia Morgan of Hearst Castle fame, and was previously the Berkeley Women's Club. The building is lovingly preserved with comforting public rooms and garden. The pool is made of Malibu tile and is gorgeous. The rooms are small but comfortable with lovely tile bathrooms. Beware though, preservation includes no air conditioning, no TVs... More

I've stayed several times and this is a very special place. It's quiet and beautiful, and they have done a wonderful job of preserving the original architecture and interior design of the building. If you want mod cons then this isn't the right place for you. But if you are someone who appreciates historical architecture and quiet places that support... More

I very much enjoyed my stay as a solo woman traveler and it was easy to imagine being here "back in the day" when it was the Berkeley Women's Club. The building is beautiful and the art deco pool is not only decorative but well kept-up, clean, and usable for swimming laps. The rooms are small and Spartan and it... More

She called it the "Little Castle" and Julia knew what she was doing. It was like a people friendly castle. We had coffee in a charming alcove next to the patio. I completely enjoyed the beautiful linens, immaculately clean room, and retro atmosphere of our room. This was a treat for a special night in Berkeley. Be sure to see... More

I had read reviews about how "no frills" these guest rooms are, but this went beyond "no frills" to "scuzzy and inconvenient." I never use the TV in my hotel rooms, anyway, and I was curious to do my lap swimming in this club's historic pool, so I booked myself one night here for a Berkeley business trip. Well, now... More

This beautiful relic is a treasure, and what a treat to stay here when in Berkeley. As others have mentioned, it was designed by Julia Morgan, who also built Hearst Castle--it's a late-1920s structure whose influences are both Gothic Revival and Moderne. The rooms are comfy and charming--no TVs! Wifi works fine throughout. Windows have brass latches, are not screened,... More

This hotel was designed by Julia Morgan, who also designed Hearst Castle. It has thick walls of concrete and steel but looks like they plastered the interior to give it some warmth aong with rich deep colored wood. To me it evoked a Catholic church or college kind of feeling/look. The place is charming but you have to overlook a... More

Dear William F, Thank you most kindly for your review! The building is indeed stunning! Julia Morgan was so very talented with her work. The architecture that you noted that looked like wood is actually concrete. The only place that there is wood is in the Ballroom. It was done that way by design. Our fine dining restaurant, Julia's is... More
