Me and my friends were on our annual tour and we had the opportunity to stay at Orchha Home-stay(OHS). It was a wounderful experience. We were fortunate to meet all the families adopted by OHS. Ashok and Anjana, who are in charge of the families, were kind enough to see to our comfort and also made us feel at home.... More

Our team feels so encouraged by your appreciation. We thought at first that the home-stay was mainly for visitors from other countries to discover life in an Indian family. But we realise that even our Indian guests find it a memorable experience. Glad you enjoyed the company of the children of the host families and thanks very, very much for... More

This was recommended in the lonely planet so we checked out the reviews on Tripadvisor. We were not disappointed. We stayed with Rambabu, his wife and 3 daughters. If you want to experience life in an Indian village with an Indian family then this is the place for you. Simple, clean and a real feeling of family sensibilities with some... More

This is a review that is going to make Rambabu, Kiran and the girls very happy. I too love Kiran's cooking. There's no restaurant in Orchha that can match the food freshly prepared on a wood fire by our home-stay ladies. Thanks ever so much for your appreciation of our work and that of the host family. We do hope... More

Orchha is an idyllic town on the banks of river Betwa in Tikamgarh district of Madhya Pradesh. First of all thanks to all the reviews on Trip Advisor because of which we chose to stay at Orchha Homestay. We stayed with Mukesh & Family. The food prepared by the family was simple and tasty. It was totally a different experience. Different... More

It's wonderful for our host families that the home-stay is appreciated not only by those discovering India but by fellow Indians too. Thanks so much for giving us full marks, Gurpreetji. So glad you enjoyed your stay at Mukesh's. More

One of the remarkable experiences of my trip. Getting to know from so up close the life of an indian family in the village was invaluable to me. Cozy little rooms, impeccably clean. The silence of the forest, the night birds singing, had such a great night's sleep. The people working on the project showed me around the village too... More

That's precisely our aim - to let our visitors experience life in an Indian family of small farmers, artisans and daily wage workers. The discovery works both ways - our host families have discovered other cultures and particularly more equal male-female relationships through the guests who stay with them. The benefits have been both economic and cultural! Thanks so much... More

Little to add to the previous reviews except support. This is a really good concept well executed. My family were lovely. Would stay again if I return to Orchha. Note that it is a 1-2km walk from Orchha Town, but this was not a problem. Perhaps the only thing that could be improved was the directions when arriving from Jhansi... More

We'll be happy to welcome you on your next visit. Glad you liked your host family. Thanks also for your suggestion for improvement - we'll put directions to the home-stay on our web-site. I usually include it in responses to visitors coming by car. And we are always happy to organise a pick up by auto-rickshaw or taxi from Jhansi... More

On 3rd of December 20013 there was a very enjoyable 10th birthday party for Kanchan, a most delightful little girl who is the small sister of Anjuna who is in charge of cleaning the rooms at Orchha Home Stay. It was truly an international event - apart from Kanchan and her Mother and Father we had two Russians, one Turk,... More

Good to hear from you, Nick. Like Kanchan's birthday party, the home-stay has become very international. In 2012-13 we received 882 guests of 26 different nationalities. And you'll be happy to know that we are going to build a new room at Anjana's house which will bring the total to 9 rooms. So next time you come there'll be plenty... More

During our 3 months trip, visiting Nepal and India , we had booked 3 nights in advance with Asha from Orchha homestay. Their website http://orchha.org/ (in English and French) is very informative, the replies by mail quick and enthusiastic. It was a great experience. We stayed 3 nights with Mukesh, his 3 children and grandmother (Mukesh wife unfortunately died in... More

Your review is heart warming for us and your host family too! Thanks for your wonderful appreciation and for the detailed description of the neighbourhood in which the home-stay is situated. Reviews like yours will certainly help our attempt at securing a livelihood for the host families all of whom were below poverty line before they participated in the home-stay.... More

We stayed here with the family - grandmother, mother, father, 3 sons & new daughter in- law , for 3 nights. Thanks so much for giving us this excellent review. The family you stayed with are small farmers so much of the food they serve comes from their own field. Hari continues to work as a labourer on construction sites. The home-stay has tripled their income and they love receiving guests. Kusum's lovely smile makes up for their lack of English.... More

First, I need to say that you come here for the experience, not for luxury. The facilities are basic but comfortable and clean. Our toilet was of the dry composting type and there is no running water (it all has to be fetched by the family by hand from the local freshwater pumps). We stayed five days with an absolutely... You're perfectly right. Its the experience that counts. So glad you appreciated it. All the host families were selected because they were below poverty line. So we don't offer luxury but try to keep it simple, clean and comfortable. We do have rooms with Western flush toilets, so if guests have difficulty with Indian toilets we do our best to... More

We stayed for one night with our 8 year old twins. The room was spotless and the bathroom facilities included a flushing loo. Our kids loved mingling with the local children as did we. Thanks so much for your encouragement. Our host families simply love it when guests come with their children. We've seen improvements in their parenting after having observed interaction between children and parents from elsewhere. And of course, the neighbours are happy too to find new playmates. Do come again sometime. More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Stay with a local family & discover India differently. Orchha is a great place to relax in and discover 16th century monuments. We offer clean and comfortable rooms, furnished in traditional style, built in the courtyard of the host family. The rooms have fans and mosquito nets and the bathroom & toilets are ecological. The family provides home-cooked food and kids have plenty of playmates. The home-stay is a 25 minute walk from the palace. We also have bicycles on rent. This is a social enterprise allowing poor families to benefit from tourism and visitors to see how most families in India live today. Call it responsible tourism or eco tourism - your visit will improve the lives of many and be an experience to remember. ... more   less
