This is a gorgeous ranch in a fantastic location, very close to Cotopaxi national park. The site used to be an Inca building, and still has the charming mortarless stone walls mixed with 17th and “21st” century construction. Some parts are still incomplete with rebar sticking out of the top of a few buildings and half-finished sections. You can reach... More

Our rooms were extraordinary (actually 'suites' as we received a free upgrade) with huge fireplaces to warm them !! We liked this hacienda for its charm, for the quality of the accomodation and the food, for the setting as we kept looking at the Cotopaxi through the window of the living room. We took 2 of the activities they suggest... More

My stay at San Agustin De Callo was defined by the utter lack of professional attention to my needs as a solo guest. When I arrived I was the only guest who required check-in at this small inn. The recently hired person in charge of doing so had no idea what to do. It took half an hour to get... More

My wife and I visited the hacienda for lunch while on a day trip to the Cotopaxi Volcano. The hacienda is very authentic colonial establishment built within amazing Inca ruins. Lunch was typically Andian and very good. The views are spectacular. the staff was very welcoming and presented a surprise visit of 15 llamas. My visit to the hacienda will... More

After a day at Cotopaxi Volcano we arrived down a dirt road in the middle of seemingly nowhere to this stunning hacienda. Other reviewers have covered the basics but in most rooms you will have a portion of Inca wall uncovered along with open fireplace and frescoed walls, free local chocolates and a huge bathroom. Top it off with a... More

From the moment you see Hacienda San Agustin de Callo you know you are somewhere special. I believe we were the only guests, certainly I didnt see any others and we dined alone in an old Inca walled room. We were allowed to feed the llama and giant St Bernard and were given free range of the beautiful grounds. Our... More

We spent two days there and it was the best stay of our trip. It's in the middle of nowhere, with a view on the surrounding volcanos. The hacienda is build on an ancient Inca site, and the rooms have some very nice and well preserved archeological parts. The dinning room has a very nice atmosphere. Upon arriving you can... More

To stay in a 15th century Inca temple is enough in itself but to be lulled to sleep by a roaring log-fire, cuddled-up on a feather mattress with handmade bedcovers and hot-water bottle, is glorious experience. A royal breakfast, in a dining room with fine Inca stone walls, thatched ceiling and trapezoidal doors, we looked up to the snowcap of... More

We went there for lunch in our way to Riobamba. The food was delicious. The hotel is a stunning old hacienda built over real Inca ruins. There is a old temple perfectly maintained which is now a Catolic church. We loved the place so much that we decided to come back and stay for one or two nights. The views... More

The drive from the Quito airport took over 2 hours (lots of traffic which is how I think of Ecuador)....it was a Friday early evening. We arrived in the dark, dropped our bags in the room, and went immediately to dinner. Dinner is served in the Inca building which serves as the dining room for lunch and dinner. Our room... More

Since the 15th century San Agustin de Callo has served as an Inca fortress and palace and Augustinian monastery and was also temporary home of the French Geodesic Mission (1742) whose scientific work helped change the shape of the planet. Other famous visitors include the brilliant German scientist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt and English mountain climber Edward Whymper. In 1912 the Hacienda was purchased by General Leonidas Plaza Gutierrez, leader of the liberal Revolution and two-time President of Ecuador. With only eleven rooms, it is one of the most romantic spots for honeymoons and other special occasions. San Agustin de Callo constitutes the only lived in museum of Inca Imperial and Spanish Colonial style. Surrounded by the smoke-blackened Inca walls of the dining room, one can marvel at the infinite precision of the stonemasonry, a monument to the unrivalled craftsmanship of the Incas, and admire the stunning view of Cotopaxi, the highest active volcano in the world. The peaceful atmosphere and magical landscape combine to make San Agustin a sanctuary of inspiration for artists and lovers of nature and a restful haven for weary travelers ... more   less
