Unexpectedly charming, with a lot of history if you're interested. "Wild", indigenous and spacious gardens to walk around in, and beautiful old (Trappist Monk) buildings. The Superior rooms are very comfortable, although a little basic but with a good TV bouquet selection. Cell signal is almost non-existent, but that is probably a perk, and free Wifi is available. If there... More

An easy hour's drive from Pietermaritzburg, nestling in the romantic St.Isidor Valley, King's Grant Country Retreat can be found. Ideally situated, we stayed on a dinner bed and breakfast basis for two nights while on business in central Ixopo. Built in 1891 by German Trappist monks, we were captivated by the charm and rustic appeal of the place. The rooms... More

Kings Grant built in 1891 is nestled in the heart of the Isidor Valley in Ixopo, approximately 1,5 hrs from Durban. I had a weekend stay. My first thoughts, hmmm interesting. We were greeted by Cheryl, pleasant and friendly, reception area, bland with some interesting paintings and a couple of items for sale. We were shown to our room, quite... More

We stayed in self catering accommodation - a superior room and a standard room - both were surprisingly spacious with the superior room having the benefit of a much appreciated fireplace, a separate eating area, a full bath and a better kitchen. The beds were cosy and comfortable and the standard of furnishing reasonable and clean. In the kitchen, a... More

Mixed feelings at first, as the rooms was a bit dirty with spider webs in some areas etc. But, the rooms are very spacious and has a nice fireplace in the "lounge" area. Very quiet and relaxed place, nice surroundings on the farm if you walk a bit. The food though is delicious! Breakfast is included and dinner option is... More

The room was great, food was excellent, staff was friendly... that's for the basics! The place is amazing, an old trappist mission. It's like spending the night in a museum. Beautiful gardens too! My only critic is the music in the restaurant area. We don't need that in such a serene place. King's Grant is off the beaten tracks, but... More

The rooms are tastefully done up, the food delicious and the service friendly. A lovely place to stay for a quiet night away and I can imagine that it would be a beautiful wedding venue. Interesting history to the buildings too.

King's Grant is the perfect getaway and being virtually equidistant between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, the ideal venue for a meet-up with our good friends. Located in a re-invented Trappist monastery, King's Grant oozes history and romanticism with the magnificent indigenous gardens adding huge dollops of natural beauty. No wonder the bird life makes this a favourite haunt for the tweeters... More

What a wonderful hidden gem in the middle of the Natal Midlands. We took a detour down to the Natal South Coast and spent a wonderful night at Kings Grant. We stayed in one of the self catering suites and just loved it. The gardens are beautiful and peace and tranquility abounds. The bird life was fantastic! The staff were... More

Kings Grant is well kept (not all run down when we were there contrary to another report), wonderfully peaceful, and beautifully located. It's just outside of town but you are in town in less than 10 minutes. The individual modern, beautifully outfitted rondavels are as cozy as you could wish for. And since there is not any real place to... More
