Spent 5 nights in Taiyuan. Unfortunately, I don't think there are many quality hotel options, even though Taiyuan has 4 million people in it. Service was good, even though we had a moment or two of cultural language difficulty. The lobby is pretty nice, but often smelled of smoke, since a large percentage of Chinese smoke. Was tough on our... More

This hotel fails to live up to the promise of its name. It might have been grand when was built – perhaps thirty or forty years ago – but it appears rather dated now. My room was small and it seemed cosy after the sub-zero temperatures outside. I had two large suitcases and had to open them one by one... More

Another impressive foyer. Loved the statue outside of a pianist, music from a pianist inside is piped outside to it. Free Wifi in the lobby is an asset, room was big enough and breakfast had a good range of food. Coffe was expensive from the restaurant but we enjoyed sitting and listening to the piano.

This hotel is a good place for an overnight stop.Day crew speaks decent english.Night crew and restaurant crew do not speak english that well.Rooms are comfortable, well equipped and fairly large.Rooms on the higher floors are recently renovated and include more non smoking rooms. The hotel is a little older, yet it still has some of its grand appearance. 2 lounges for... We spent a night in Taiyuan on our way to Pinyao. The hotel is in fairly good condition and everything in the room works. The internet speed is very fast - 75Mbps download and 50Mbps upload. The breakfast buffet has a wide variety but there is limited sitting in the dining room. We had a very good lunch in the... More

The Shanxi Grand is our company's contracted hotel in Taiyuan, and I've stayed here about ten times over the past few years. I believe it was Taiyuan's best hotel at one time, and with no famous chain names entering the market this is still the hotel of choice here. In any other major market such as Beijing, this hotel would... More

Shanxi Grand Hotel was a five star hotel in Taiyuan town.Considering the Northern Loaction and its not so prominent position in the CHina map- the hotel was very posh, comfortable and located at a great place. We had stayed for two nights and we did not feel that we are staying in far off town. It was agreat surprise and... More

This was my third visit so I thought I'd share my views. I'm not a big fan of Taiyuan. First time I came, it was like walking into a coal plant because the air was so bad, and this hotel mismanaged the booking so I ended up with a twin room (with one of the leaky walk-in showers) which smelt... I originally stayed at the Shanxi Grand in May 2007, and I returned and stayed there again in March 2009. It's changed. The bathtub/shower I loved so much before has been replaced with a standing shower (only), although it was a very nice shower, if we'd been doing an adoption it would've been a pain to try and clean a...
