Perched on the jagged rim of the crater, wreathed in morning mist, camouflaged in river-stone and cloaked in indigenous creepers, the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is a triumph of ecological and architectural fusion. Sensitively constructed so as to take nothing from its environment whilst affording endless vistas over the heat-shimmering reaches of the crater below, the clustered boulder-built buildings of the Lodge hug the crater rim, linked by rope-lashed timber walkways that skirt the buttressed roots of ancient, liana-hung trees. more » « less

We stayed here for two nights in two adjacent rooms (children next door) - check in was swift and the rooms were warm with wonderful views of the crater (if there is no mist, sunrise is spectacular), the bathrooms are OK (nothing special) but there was no hot water when we arrived however a plentiful supply was restored within about... more

We stayed at this lodge in the middle of our safari, it was the first place we could get internet access or make a phone call, You have to call the front desk to place the call, then they call you when they connect. I waited 30 minutes and called the front desk again, and they told me my line... more

My family and I went on Safari and stayed at the Ngorongoro Serena for 2 nights. We absolutely loved the location. Lovely views of the crater, and we literally had animals (including an elephant) crossing as such close proximity. Amazing. The rooms had a spectacular overlook of the crater. They were small, but comfortable enough and heated (which was necessary... more

We were traveling with our children (6, 9 & 11) so we needed connecting rooms. Not sure if this is why we ended up at the very end (74 &75) of the bottom floor but... The view was good but not as good as it could be and the walk to the restaurant was a bit long. We also stayed... more

On our trip to Tanzania we visited the Ngorongoro crater which was really amazing! Although we read quite a bit about the different national parks, it was quite hard to really get a feel how this crater would look like. However, in reality the view from the top is awesome and the wildlife down the crater is super! We stayed... more

The hotel from the outside resembles a pile of rocks which beautifully blends into the crater rim. The room was decorated well with cave paintings on the wall, the room was comfy, clean and the bathroom was huge. The balcony has a superb view of the crater when the cloud lifted, actually that included almost every window in the hotel!... more

The views were phenomenal, as the lodge is right on the edge of the crater. Unfortunately, there were clouds obstructing the views in the morning, and it was a bit chilly to sit on the balcony. When the clouds did clear, it was a superb view directly into the crater. The room was basis and small. The food was all... more

This is a wonderful lodge with wonderful views. I can't imagine how anyone could've compared it to a retirement home. My best advice...avoid Room 8. We were mistakenly put in that room our first night and there were no more rooms so we had to stay. It's in the lower part of the lodge, doesn't have a good view and... more

We booked our entire vacation through Serena Hotels with a goal of being married after a balloon flight over the Serengeti. We stayed at various Serena hotels throughout Kenya and Tanzania from 1-2 nights. Unlike the Serengeti Lodge (reviewed on TA too) and all other Serena lodges we stayed at, the service at Ngorongoro was horrible. We arrive midafternoon on... more

Located at the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater offering a spectacular view. The entire hotel is built to resemble a pile of rocks outside while on the inside and its warm and cosy replete with all modern amenities. Check in is smooth I got the room i requested.Try booking into the room at a higher level for a better view. The... more
