This is one of the most unique, and beautiful, places I have ever stayed at in Tanzania. The lodge is situated on a small island off of Mafia, and you take a boat to get there. It's a little out of the way, but that's part of the attraction (and the only time the distance is an inconvenience is when... More

This is an incredible lodge on a tiny island off of the coast of Tanzania. We spent 3 nights in a beautiful treehouse - and 3 days snorkelling with whale sharks, diving on a reef, sailing and enjoying wonderful meals. The owners Anne and Jean are gracious hosts. The only downside that my wife and I found - was that... More

gorgeous underwater tunnels, silent sunset sailing, feasting by candlelight under a tamarind tree, or among ruins covered with strangler fig, or on a stone quay next to sleeping dhows under a star-studded tropical sky, spending nights in your own tree house, showering using cunning kerosene-powered hot water, frangipani, mangroves, birds, delicious food, delightful hosts, sundowners at the Red Herring.. Amazing tree houses wrapped around the baobab trees are a dream and sleeping in them leaves you awestruck, nature at its best. Nothing is going to hurt you so just sit back and enjoy the ride - it doesn't get much better. Not many places left like this, so enjoy it while you can. Food on Chole is excellent and... More

From the moment we waded ashore at Chole we knew we were somewhere exceptional. After the welcome drink, the walk passing by the atmospheric ruins to our tree home for the next three nights confirmed that first impression. We knew instantly that this was not going to be a holiday break for the faint hearted. The steps up into the... More

Our family of 4 (kids 11 and 4) had an amazing holiday for 8 nights at Chole Mjini. Ann-Marie and Karen were outstanding hosts. The kids had a great time on the sandbar, snorkeling, riding on the dhows, etc. It was an ideal place for an electronics-free week with the kids. Excellent food, locales, and company for dinner each night.... More

We were actually here a few years ago now, but it remains one of the highlights of our yearlong trip around the world. These are real tree houses, the solar-heated water for showers is awesome, the candlelit meals, the snorkeling experiences, the boat rides to a private sandbar... Truly a dream.

TREE HOUSE "A tree house, a free house, A secret you and me house, A high up in the leafy branches Cozy as can be house. A street house, a neat house, Be sure to wipe your feet house Is not my kind of house at all- Let's go live in a tree house.” ― Shel Silverstein, Where the Sidewalk... More

My wife and I spent 4 nights on Chole Island in October 2014. It was everything we hoped for and more. The only downer was the elusive whalesharks, but then again, it was only the beginning of the season for them. Chole is a unique place to stay, and it's probably not for everyone. If you want air con and... More

One of my dreams was to live on a tree house .... which came true at Chole island. Each tree house has a character; I was living at the 2nd tree house (Mbili) which is in a fabulous position, spacious and built next to the oldest baobab tree. Amazing! The food was delicious (for breakfast do order ‘cheeci omeleti’). The... More
