The 3 to 4 hour drive to Gondar from Bahir Dar is exciting, beautiful and tiring. Gondar, Ethiopia's fourth largest city, is in the mountains to the north of Lake Tana, source of the Bue Nile. Our reservation at Taye Belay Hotel was for two nights. We had left a disappointing overnighter at Bahir Dar – the international standard hotel... More

The Taye hotel is set one road away from the center of Gondar city and within walking distance to the Gondar castles. It is thus away from the bustle and dust of town, with a view of the town. However, it's not quiet due to the continuous droning from a nearby Church or continuous celebrations in town. There are a... More

Only spent one night there on way to simien mountains. The hotel had good staff clean room was average and shower very poor. The restaurant had a buffet which had a good variety of food. Wifi poor only ok near reception and patchy as usual in Ethiopia.

The hotel is not lux by any means, but definitely comfortable considering where you are. The hotel is pretty centrally located near the Gondar Castle and there are a few restaurants within walking distance to the hotel as well as a few shops and such in the ground level. We had taken a car from Bahir Dar and the driver... More

My partner and I decided to spend one night in Gondar and stayed at the Taye Belay Hotel. Booking on the telephone, was very easy and reassuring, our booking had been confirmed. The receptionist was honest about booking a taxi for us from the airport. They don't provide a shuttle but they will organise a taxi for 200BR. They gave... More

I spent only 1 short night here but the room was quiet and comfortable, water was hot, staff friendly, and free wifi is available although was quite slow in the room but better in the lobby. I ate at the restaurant, they had either a menu or set 3 course menu, I went for the set menu which was good... More

What was good: * central location; * free wifi even in the rooms; * good choice of food, fresh juices. What I didn't like: * megaphone noise early in the morning, also during day time and on weekends for a few hours non stop praying (don't forget your earplugs or you will go crazy); * my windom in the bathroom... You won't be able to escape the ultra loud call to prayer from our friends at the mosque. then the Christians blast on their megaphones to provide competition. It's all part of the Gondar fabric. The hotel works. Don't expect much from the insolent staff in the breakfast room/ restaurant. The breakfast disappointed. Bring your own oatmeal, or brave the... More

I stayed at the Taye for 2 weeks whilst working at the local hospital. The room was very clean and tidy and the restaurant was very good. All the staff were extremely friendly and always very helpful. The manager supported with transport when needed and it was a pleasure to stay there. Every day staff greeted me with a smile... More

Spent on night here on a 'whistle-stop' tour of northern Ethiopia. Room was clean, with lots of hot water, hair dryer etc. Staff were helpful. Lovely view out over the town from the rooms at the front and from reception. Restaurant offered usual fare for such hotels, nothing spectacular.
