My wife and I stayed here several times with our children in the 1990s, when it was a firm family favourite. It is just as wonderful if not better. The welcome was friendly and personal without being obtrusive. the room was so comfortable, and although we only had a bar supper and breakfast, the food on offer appeared to be... More

My wife and I have just had a lovely Christmas afternoon tea at the Gliffaes. It started with a warm welcome after a relaxing journey along the estate drive watching the pheasants. Our table close to the log fire was in warm and comfortable surroundings whilst also overlooking the wintery and windswept river. The varied and plentiful sandwiches were extremely... More

We had a totally amazing two nights at this hotel on the edge of the Black Mountains in Wales. The grounds are extensive and beautifully kept and the house, although not so attractive from the outside, is fascinating and embraces much that I would say was luxurious without being pretentious. Our room, No. 4, was large, very clean and had... More

This Hotel is not to everyones taste. It is well off the main road and you will need a good map to find it. If you want plastic music and huge menus then it is not for you. However if your idea of a perfect winters evening is collapsing into an armchair in front of a log fire with a... More

My friend and I decided to take our Mums for a birthday treat to Gliffaes for afternoon tea. We expected lace tablecloths, china tea pots, a cake stand with lots of lovely choices of sandwiches and cakes. The buffet style serve yourself was extremely poorly presented, plates were half empty, there was very little choice, I wish I'd taken photos... More

First time to this hotel after many recommendations. Lovely old hotel with lots of character. Booked for Christmas afternoon tea and arrived at 4.30pm. The sitting rooms were full but we chose to sit in the very comfortable bar which had a fire burning and lots of comfortable seating. Tea was a buffet with a waiter serving tea and coffee.... More

After booking a table for afternoon tea in the dining room we arrived to find we were expected to eat off our laps if we could find a table. This is fine if this is what you want but I had specifically reserved a table in the dining room. I explained to the gentleman serving us behind the bar and... More

This is a lovely Victorian property with nice, helpful staff,in a spectacular quiet country location, way off the beaten track. However, the exterior is showing its age and needs work. We had a room in a nearby cottage, that was fine, but certainly not luxurious. Everything was neat, tidy and functional, but to get to the next level needs modernisation.... More

Lovely atmosphere in country house hotel. Excellent location with country walk round grounds before lunch. Meal was traditional Sunday Roast Beef etc. Great meal with good service. Coffee after in lovely conservatory overlooking River Usk. Memorable meal.

Visited for a birthday treat. The weather was terrible which made the real fire even more welcoming. The tea is served buffet style which is unusual but the quality and selection was perfect and it made a pleasant change to have a choice rather than being presented with a set amount and avoided any waste. The staff were all welcoming... More
