THIS PROPERTY IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED. A country house hotel, a former private mansion house dating back to the 1700's, sitting within 8 acres of its own gardens, a golf course adjacent. It is located near to the picturesque town of Newton Stewart built on the banks of the River Cree, and is within walking distance of the Galloway forest and hills. There is not only a variety of walks around the town and through the forest, but great cycling tracks as well. Slightly further away are a number of historical sights and the Machar Peninsular. On the Machar peninsular you will find the Booktown of Wigtown famous for its annual book festival, picturesque ports, a cave that was occupied by an early Christian Missionary to the Area, a bird sanctuary and the furthest south whisky distillery in Scotland. The Mull of Galloway, the most southerly point in Scotland, is not far away with its bird life and views to Ireland and the Isle of Man. If the magical village of Brigadoon was to appear this is where it would be.

First impressions were great, a friendly host, Ben, a beautiful big room downstairs, lovely staircase and a huge bedroom which we have to say was very clean. Ben was very welcoming, showed us around downstairs and told us if we wanted the fire lighting in the lounge it wouldn't be a problem as we were the only guests that night. Our room was lovely, big and bright and a four poster bed, and to be fair we only gave the hotel 30 minutes notice before our last minute booking so were pleased that Ben had put a small fan heater in the room to warm it up. Unfortunately with three small radiators, one under each window, (only two working and all on very low which we could not adjust) this did not make any difference to the heating of the room. The glass was single glazing (it was a very windy night too so they rattled all night) and once the drapes were closed they covered the radiators and all the heat went into the windows. We went out for a lovely dinner and on our return we came back to darkness and had to use the torches on our phones to be able to see to get up the stairs in the entrance and it was only 8.30pm, surely it is acceptable to have lighting on so early? We also came back to a cold room which I have to say had a foisty smell and we had to sleep in jumpers to keep warm, totally unacceptable when we paid £100. The bathroom was very tired with black mould on the grout around the bath, the toilet did not flush and we had to take the top of the cistern off and manually flush it each time we used it. The bin in the bathroom did not work either . . The windows were running like rivers the next morning with condensation dripping onto the carpet. I am sure that the cost of the room, £100, should include keeping your guests warm, and to have no heating at all come on the next morning was disgraceful, and when I mentioned this to Ben, there was no explanation other than "the house was very cold last night! " I have to say the bed was lovely, very comfortable and clean. Also we noticed the toilet seat was all stained underneath. (We did not look for faults but with having to take the top off the toilet, we placed it on the pan with the lid up so as not to damage the seat and couldn't help but notice.) The next morning we came downstairs at 8am to ask for some heating to be switched on but could not find Ben or get any attention and as Ben had said the bell at the door was for emergencies we felt we could not ring that. We came down again at 9.30 to check out and everywhere was still in darkness with all curtains closed and we rang the bell, knocked on doors and shouted but could not get any attention again, which is why I wrote a note and left it on the reception desk to say I would call the hotel later to pay, or could they call me. When we eventually spoke, I mentioned not being able to find anyone , Ben said he had overslept as his grandchildren had been there the previous night and didn't get much sleep. I also mentioned about the cold to which the reply was that it had been a cold night throughout the house !! I also mentioned about the bathroom and Ben offered us to return another time for half price but unfortunately a lot needs to be done before we would consider that. I emailed Ben on my return and even wrote to him just to get his feedback but he hasn't replied.

We found this hotel on a trip advisor search of hotels near where we had business in Scotland. First contact with Lara, the co-owner was very pleasant and she gave us the impression that this was a small guest house which also served as their home. Nothing could be further from the truth,, this is a massive beautifully kept coutry house with genuine oil paintings that have been with the house for centuries. Lara and Ben the owners, welcomed us to the palatial entrance lounge with a piece of home made cake and cup of tea. We had managed to get the last room and when we were shown to the room, we were stunned with the size of the room, the views from the third floor and the quality of it. Unlike most converted country hotels, this has been converted many years ago with view to comfort and luxury for the guests. No wifi in the rooms was not a disadvantage as the large spacious lounge with a big roaring log fire was a much nocer alternative to working in the rooms, but good mobile signal means that anyone with a mobile hub will have good internet and emails. The owners have only been running the hotel for a few months so have not got a full restaurant yet the breakfast was magnificent with a full Scottish breakfast including PROPER Scottish porridge in a stunning high ceilinged dining room. The hotel despite its age shows no internal signs of dilapidation and I wish we had the time to look properly round the many paintings and their history and the huge 8 acres of picturesque grounds, completely unspoilt by development. We only stayed one night, but wish it had been a week. Lara and Ben, you are amazing people and thank you for making us feel so welcome in your lovely hotel. We will be back but you do really need to tell the world how good your place is and how warm your welcome is. I wholeheartedly recommend this hotel and the surrounding area for a short break or business meetings.

We had a very nice room and the staff were friendly. It was quiet when we stayed but that did mean I could play the grand piano without fear of upsetting the other guests. They made some nice vegan dishes for us in the evening.

We were the only guests in the hotel that evening, so they opened specially for us. We were given the best room which had a four poster bed for the standard rate. Room was very comfortable and spacious and grounds are very attractive. Staff treated us like lord and lady of the manor and were very attentive. Dinner and breakfast were very good, although in different circumstances I would have found the dinner expensive. Lots of ambience with oak panelling and log fires even if there weren't other guests to share it.

We stayed for one night a while back and when opportunity offered we grabbed a second chance for two nights. It's spacious, tranquil and well-appointed. Reasonably priced for what it offers. Joy - they still have sheets and blankets on the beds instead of the ubiquitous duvets. Dinner excellent. te only weakness was the breakfast with a lack of fresh fruit and an extra charge of £5 for a kipper - surely a kipper can't cost more than the ingredients of a full Scottish!

Lovely hotel although a bit of a time warp. Very old fashioned which suits the building and surroundings but you could easily think it was 1970 with the decor and bathroom fittings etc. Food was very good quality and chef was accommodating re. dietary restrictions. Coffee after meal and breakfast was quite weak. Ok if you take milk and sugar but if you like coffee you will be disappointed. Staff very friendly and hotel and grounds lovely. Could do with a sign from main road as you have to go through a housing estate to find it and it is easy to miss it as we did at first. We had a large spacious room on the first floor with a comfortable bed. Overall a nice break but a little on the pricy side at £93 p/p dbb

We have visited the Kirrough Tree hotel twice previously but they were some time ago. However the hotel was so good that we visited twice in one year. The hotel has changed. When we had previously arrived at the hotel someone had rushed out to help us with our luggage, this service was now only offered when we had struggled to the top of the entrance staircase. There is a lift to all floors! We were shown to our second floor room and entered what appeared to be a small bedroom. My wife rushed into the bathroom and the member of staff vanished. We subsequently both found her in the sitting area of the accommodation, which was in one of the turrets. The room was much bigger and better than we had first thought and the bed was comfortable. There is no bar, drinks are brought to you in the lounge but they are limited, there was no Pernod. I drank the local beer which I commend. The menu offered three choices for each course and I understand that the menu changes on a three day rotation, so if you stay for a fourth day you will see the same menu again. The food was reasonably well cooked, presented and served. The menus are not spectacular but the food served was above average but not spectacular. The breakfast menu promised a ‘Scottish’ breakfast which included haggis and potato scone. The former never appeared, and the latter was tasteless and failed to appear on our last morning and so we ate an English breakfast! The Dumfries and Galloway area is seldom visited and it has many attractions. We like the area for the contrasting landscape and seascapes and I commend it to the reader, but this hotel has declined from our previous visit. Overall my feeling about the hotel was that the service, and the hotel general, has ‘gone downhill’ since our previous visit in 2008. Consequently we may look for an alternative hotel should we visit the area again.

I would have to agree with the review from Peter. Much is attractive about this hotel, not least the Garden Suite ,which is self contained. The young female staff are very helpful and pleasant but there is an air of neglect and, having booked for a week, we were astounded to find there were only three dinner menus. The food is obviously pre-packed and seems to make little, if any use of local produce, which is a shame. We were a party of four and our friends were at pains to do things correctly in the British way. They did not deserve to have their plates whipped from under their noses while stil leating. This was very embarassing. Breakfast menu is limited and items are often said not to be in stock. This hotel is a beautiful old house ,it needs a complete refurb and someone who will take up the reins and manage it.

Stayed here about 15 years ago and was great Recent visit very disappointing Service hapzard, no one visible in charge, all lacking cohesion and focus. Very limited breakfast fare on show, and not being replenished. Long wait for cooked breakfast. Dinner very average, not great for money; not fine dining., dining room floor bounces uncomfortable as servers thump past.: so a less than relaxed experience Room v nice clean and airy, comfortable. But general country house experience just not there, and poor value for money Will not be back

It was our second vist with our greyhounds. The staff, without exception, are all excellent. The room, spacious, comfortable and easily accessible with the hounds. The food delicious for both omnivores and vegetarians The wine list pleasantly interesting and, apart from no Springbank, the whiskey options were quite extensive. Looking forward to our next visit.
