We chose this venue for dinner on w very cold January evening. Greeted by the landlord and reserved a table by the fire for us. Excellent seasonal food to a very high standard. Not your usual pub grub. More a relaxed fine dining experience. Beautiful pub with roaring fire and you can take your dog. Highly recommend

Such a lovely place, and so old and historic- expect dark and wobbly with excellent beers and excellent pub food. This place gets 5 stars and it is absolutely worth the (considerable) trek off the beaten track that you will have to make to find it. I should think everyone has been lost on their way here at least the... More

Nice out of the way pub/restaurant with a few rooms that are very comfortable, but could be a little warmer, especially over a cold and early dark weekend. Pub was busy Friday and Saturday but table is reserved for staying guests and atmosphere was very friendly. Breakfast was also very tasty.

Breakfast was excellent. We only had dinner one evening due to other commitments but it was excellent. Great ales and cider on tap. The room was clean and comfortable. The inclusion of local walks with OS maps for directions was a nice touch. We were there for a family reunion but it has inspired us to return. The one slight... More

If you're looking for a real traditional English pub with superb food and atmosphere, this is it. Down a lane off the A 30, turn left, then right and keep going down the lane till you find it. Ample parking. Stone flagged path leads to black oak door and then you step back into the early 19th century. Food is... More

We had Sunday lunch for 3 at the Compasses Inn and it was extremely good. The pub is a fabulous old 14th century inn with a wonderful open fire, low beams, some good traditional ales and a decent wine list with the option to buy many by the glass (normal or large). The starters were excellent: west coast scallops, with... More

As regular commuters on the A303 between Devon and Kent, a really good stop is needed and this pub is it. A challenge to find even if you think you know where it is (and the sat nav usually doesn't !) you will be rewarded with a really atmospheric pub. Clearly a locals' pub, there is a warm welcome for... More

Our second stay at this delightful pub. Evening meal was great and staff friendly. This time we stayed in the cottage and were able to get all our clothes washed and dried an added bonus. Lots of parking, as the location is A bit isolated
