We have just enjoyed another two night stay in a very comfortable room at this lovely old thatched pub. The Bar/Restaurant is full of character and all the staff very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed two breakfasts and two three course dinners during our stay and everything was cooked to perfection. Parking is plentiful and the accommodation very peaceful once... More

A tiny traditional picturesque country pub with low beams, a thatched roof and gardens which is hidden away down a one track lane in the depths of the beautiful Wiltshire countryside.  An excellent menu of traditional English dishes, Delicious and generous portions. We enjoyed the crab salad which was the most generous serve of crab ever, excellent plaice and steak... More

In a beautiful English village setting, I arrived a good couple of hours before official check in, the helpful manager Darren, said my room was ready, so I was allowed to check in, for which I was very grateful after a 5hr drive. The room had all the facilities I needed and was very comfortable, the pub is brilliant and... More

Four of us ate here. The atmosphere was very much that of a village pub rather than fancy restaurant...the pre dinner beers we tried were all excellently kept. The bar staff and the lady who served our meal (she'd just had a baby?) were both charming and helpful. The menu was unexpectedly fish orientated for a small inland Wiltshire pub (we... More

We received a 'Gift Ideas for Two' voucher for a Gastro Pub dinner. One of the closest was this charming place, and it allowed us to visit Shaftesbury the next day. We booked an overnighter. The room was wonderful for the price we paid. No complaints at all. Staff were professional, warm and efficient. Food was decent pub food -... More

A wonderful welcome, lovely staff, great food, very comfortable and clean room all at a very reasonable price. Would thoroughly recommend, especially to those wanting a stop over after visiting Longleats for the day. Thank you to everyone there!

Alan and Theo went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. We requested a fan for our room so Alan found one that hadn't been used for a while, cleaned it, and brought it to us. Thank you! Very welcoming atmosphere and excellent food. Would highly recommend.

We stayed at the Compasses for 3 nights in late June/early July. Lovely, peaceful location, fine room (creaky bed), good food and real ale. The only reason why I give the inn 4 stars rather than 5 is the fact that standard breakfast time does not start until 9.00am! For those wishing to use this as a base for touring... More

An absoultly loverly and quaint Olde English pub and restaurant nestled in a totally silent location. Beautiful and peaceful. The pub and restaurant are nostalgic. Food in the restaurant is excellent. Good beers and wines, very enjoyable port! We stayed at the pub in bedroom one. Thick walls, oak beams, thatched roof. A dream to many. Staff are helpfull and... My husband and I went to the Compasses for lunch last Saturday. The food was amazing and the staff really helpful. We had not visited for some time but only because we have been busy doing other things. We decided that we need to visit more often. Can't think of another establishment within miles which has the same high standards.
