Called for lunch here on a walk from Tarr Steps with a very muddy beagle. Just made it before they stopped serving food. We were quickly welcomed and given a table by the fire. Food was of very good quality - my only complaint would be that they'd run out of venison! Still - it means we'll have to return!

We came across this pub by accident and were very pleased we did. We waited for a table as the pub was packed but soon got settled by the wood burner. I ordered the lamb and hubby the venison and they were both cooked to perfection on a bed of red cabbage and juniper. Lots of fresh veg and roast... More

Overall, a lovely inn but I would look around next time I'm planning to stay in the area. The food was excellent; we enjoyed a lovely, relaxing meal in the pub next to the fireplace. The atmosphere was good even for a midweek winter's evening. Breakfast the next morning was also delicious. The rooms are perfectly good enough with big... More

We stayed in November 2014, a warmer welcome on arrival we couldn't of asked for. The landlord was very welcoming showing us to our lovely room. The room and bathroom was spotless and had everything you needed including lovely linens and towels. We ate dinner in the jakes bar, which we all had different meals all our party were thoroughly... We received a warm welcome at this cosy and atmospheric country inn. The food lived up to its excellent reputation, and we really enjoyed our meals next to the crackling log fire in Jake's Bar. Our room was perhaps just a little shabby and 'tired', but this is an old inn after all, and we found all the facilities to... More

Everything about this pub was perfect and we will definitely be back again and again! A lovely welcome, friendly locals to chat to in the bar, the opportunity to take our dog with us, etc. The room was beautiful, amazingly comfortable bed with lovely soft linens and spotless considering dogs are allowed in the rooms. The best part by far... More

A long time ago we had a 'not so good experience' at the Royl Oak, but this time we had an excellent stay. We had a very good welcome and a drink in the room. The room was very clean indeed, the bed, first class, there was a bath and the bathroom was a delight (a lot of mirrors was... More

The Royal Oak was generally a very pleasant surprise, rooms are lovely with a deep bath, thick towels and comfy bed. Food, both dinner and breakfast were well above average and a very pleasant surprise. All let down by being made to feel that our custom was a bit of a pain for the landlord and the locals. I will... A well kept and attractive pub in a beautiful location. Extremely good food, well kept beer, nice comfortable rooms so only three stars? Well a welcome would have been nice as would a smile. Although everything we wanted was there it all seemed a bit too much trouble. A word for the locals. If you are going to stare unblinkingly... More
