A long time ago we had a 'not so good experience' at the Royl Oak, but this time we had an excellent stay. We had a very good welcome and a drink in the room. The room was very clean indeed, the bed, first class, there was a bath and the bathroom was a delight (a lot of mirrors was... More

The Royal Oak was generally a very pleasant surprise, rooms are lovely with a deep bath, thick towels and comfy bed. Food, both dinner and breakfast were well above average and a very pleasant surprise. All let down by being made to feel that our custom was a bit of a pain for the landlord and the locals. I will... A well kept and attractive pub in a beautiful location. Extremely good food, well kept beer, nice comfortable rooms so only three stars? Well a welcome would have been nice as would a smile. Although everything we wanted was there it all seemed a bit too much trouble. A word for the locals. If you are going to stare unblinkingly... More

Have stayed here twice, october 2013 june 2014.On both occassions we were impressed with the food both evening and breakfast. If staying a table is reserved in the bar. a true Exmoor pub where the talk is of hunting and shooting walking etc. Very dog friendly. Landlord polite but not overly friendly until you have stayed a while . For us... More

Just spent 3 nights here, we usually stay in Exford. The room and bathroom were lovely, but felt the welcome was cold, lacking a little of the personal touch we are used to in Exmoor. Had to ask about breakfast as when we checked in we were pretty much pointed in the direction of the room and left to it.... More

Stayed here for one night. The food was amazing. Staff were very friendly and attentive. Room was clean and comfortable. 4* because for the price you pay the interior, furniture and decor of the bedrooms are dated. Bathroom was ancient and electric shower wasn't great.

This is a lovely building with interestingly shaped rooms and two nice bars. It's a bit dreary when you arrive but someone will appear eventually. The land lord was away and I gather the staff had been left to fend for themselves which they were doing very well. The waitress appeared to be working non stop but was very friendly,... More

I stayed 3 nights at the Royal Oak in August 2014. I can't praise it enough. First, it's a real pub, it feels like a real pub, with proper locals in the bar, and staff who clearly care. The room was great. It had some character, the walls and floor are not all perfectly level, but the bed is amazingly... More

I have mixed feelings about this country pub / B & B. First impressions were not great as we weren't given much of a welcome when we checked in. We were simply shown to the room, not given any information about breakfast or dinner not even a smile or a greeting. This poor first impression of the staff didn't really... More

The room could do with a bit of updating, but was perfectly comfortable and had all the things you need. The food at dinner and breakfast was very good and the landlord couldn't have been more helpful and welcoming.
