We had the special of the day which was lamb, food was tasty but portion size was more a la carte! Wouldn't go back as not good value for money! Service was ok nothing special. Took a while to get served.

This is a delightful restaurant with welcoming and pleasant staff. I provides for nice intimate dinning should you wish with a number of little alcoves, We had lunch recent. The menu has s good number of dishes to meet most tastes. Most dishes have some interesting twists that gives the kitchen an opportunity to display their range of skills. We... More

This was a restaurant that grabbed our attention whenever we have driven through Saffron Walden. We booked in for Sunday lunch and it was very busy which led to doubts about waiting times. We shouldn't have worried. Staff were attentive and polite despite being rushed off their feet. The food arrived twenty mins after ordering and the various roasts we... More

on a promo trip from France with wife Carole Massey also promoting her art and books. We don't do pubs or hotel food but would return here any day.The jewel in the crown was our server Edward Bedbrook. If you want to learn how to treat customers just watch this guy in action. He goes the extra mile with a... More

Stayed overnight on a Friday just as a close to home getaway for an evening... Lovely characterful bar/restaurant, friendly staff and comfortable tastefully decorated rooms. Went with friends and all agreed would return. .. Lovely meal in the restaurant and so nice to find somewhere that offers most of its wines. .. Bar the very expensive ones... by the glass!... More

Excellent food, very helpful and friendly staff, good value for money, extensive wine list - would definitely go back again. Good room with plenty of historic character, very comfortable bed, excellent in-room coffee making facilities. Topped off by lucky coincidence of it being fireworks night in the town!

The room we stayed in was very comfortable, with a soft firm bed and large pillows, as well as a chez lounge, which I loved. The problems came with the bathroom. Firstly, the light wouid only stay on for a short time, without movement triggering the sensor. So, whilst on the toilet you had to stretch your legs out to... More

When I've stumbled upon pubs in the main thoroughfare of a regional town before they've been at best average, at worst like a Wetherspoons pub for food, only twice as expensive. The Cross Keys wasn't like this. I had only the goats cheese brulee with beetroot slaw and some chips but both were tasty and hit the spot. Looking at... More

Have eaten here 3/4 times over last 6 months and never been disappointed. Pork, pear & walnut risotto a rare treat- home made burgers the best I've ever had. Great food and service with an outstanding choice of beer and wine
