I've been there a couple of times for lunch when the King's Arms has been full. It's not bad in there, but the atmosphere is cold and gloomy- probably because it's dark and rather clinical inside. You're very conscious of being in an hotel bar rather than in a proper pub. Still, the food is undeniably very good and they... More

I live in the town, so I am unlikely to stay, but the meals served in the bar deserve tribute for their quality and reasonable price. The fish and chips were ample and produced briskly. The burger was praised by my colleague.

So, a group of us stayed here so we could attend a concert at Audley End. It's a fab old building and as such the floor boards squeak, the stairs are steep and the rooms are odd shapes, but the building must be a couple of hundred years old so I am not sure what people expect. I enjoyed it... More

We spent a whole weekend in Saffron Walden in ESSEX due to a family wedding the wedding was fantastic what a" scene" town so old and so quaint. We had a great pleasure of staying at The Hotel Saffron in the high street only 3 stars but so so different creaking stairways to give it authenticity, draped in wood everywhere... More

I can't fault the staff at all - very attentive, courteous and friendly - and the location could not have been better! I've seen reviews where they complain about the car park but we had no problems. We arrived shortly after check in and the car park was empty when we checked out early the next morning. The room itself... More

This hotel is a little Gem. Their rooms are quirky with beams and some of the rooms have been modernised. A couple of the suites are wonderfully decorated. There is still some work going on but with new management things are changing rapidly in particular their restaurant and menu is delightful and has something for everyone. Staff are very polite... Stayed at this hotel for work in local area been there a few times. Very drab interior. I can cope with this if one of there wifi's would actually work in the rooms. Complained every time i was there and nothing was done about it! I mean come on wifi boosters are pretty cheap nowadays. They had maybe 4 different... More

I read the reviews of The Saffron Hotel & prepared for the worse but were pleasently surprised. Our room (6) was clean & comfortable, the beds were comfortable, the decor a little dingy. The bathroom was spacious but shower cubicle very small with no room to move! The towels were clean & soft, there were sachets of shower gel, shampoo,... More

The room was large but dingy. The bathroom very dated. The bed very small. It was clean but had little else to recommend it. The female staff on reception was taciturn to the point of rudeness. We ate dinner here and it was good food at a reasonable price. I don't see how this hotel is 3 stars. The parking... More

Saffron Walden takes the second parts of its name from the threatening fortification of Walden Castle, erected by the Normans after the Conquest, and the first from the rare and precious saffron crocus, for which the town became famous, used in medicine, cooking and as the source of a rich yellow dye. The hotel has 16 en-suite bedrooms (all 100% non smoking) which all have tea/coffee and ironing facilities. The hotel also has a paneled Restaurant and Lounge/Bar area.
