We rented the whole hostel over Valentine's weekend for a group of 36 Spice members and used it as a base to walk from. The hostel is basic, but was warm & welcoming with a good sized communal area, fairly well equipped kitchens and the bedrooms were fine. Just what you would expect from a hostel really. The location is... More

Denise a very friendly host, the hostel-a converted chapel- is a novel and quirky venue... Basic, but comfortable and fine for what we needed. Shops and restaurants/pubs right outside the door so perfect location! We ate at the Mango Tree Indian Restaurant which was excellent

On arrival, we were geeted by an overwhelming and foul wet dog smell in the entrance hallway and dormitory corridoors (however, rooms and dining/social areas were fine) which was present throughout our stay. I had booked and paid for an 8-bed dorm for myself and 7 others for 2 nights well in advance of our stay. However, despite confirming the... More

I stayed here in the summer whilst on the coast to coast walk.It is everything it should be, cheap, clean, good breakfast, and most importantly excellent drying room. It is situated centrally in the charming town and is a stone's throw from shops, pubs etc. There is a laundry just behind this hostel which is self service.Oo

A group of seven of us on the coast to coast walk stayed for three nights in this comfortable (old church) youth hostel. It is situated in the middle of the old market town....is spacious, comfortable, has a large dining area, and well equipped kitchen. Most importantly was the generosity and helpfulness of Denise (beyond the call of duty). It... More

I stayed here alone a few weeks ago whilst doing Coast to Coast. Denise is a very warm and friendly person, and runs the hostel single-handedly. She is working on improving it. The communal dining/kitchen area is great - really warm, comfortable place to be. The self-catering kitchen is excellent - spotlessly clean and very well equipped. All of the... More

We were greeted by Denise when we arrived about 8.30pm and shown the communal area and the facilities. The kitchen is well stocked with everything you would expect, the communal area, part of the old church, feels spacious and inviting. The balcony is a great extra feature and a good place to sit and relax with friends without being in... More

This hostel is on the route of the coast-to-coast walk and therefore has a rapid turnover of walkers and cyclists, all of whom are near exhaustion when they appear in the evening. I came upon it by chance as a solo traveller and it was just the most fantastic and friendly place to stay. It is situated in a former... More

The YHA used to own this hostel, a converted church, but it is now owned and run by Denise who is as easy going as it is possible to be. Staying there is cheap so do not be surprised that it is pretty basic. However, it is very clean, spacious and has everything most people would need. On one night... More

We stayed here on our coast to coast walk. We were met with a friendly welcome and a nice cup of tea. Great after a long day walking from shap. I was even given a new walking pole after breaking mine! The old church was clean, comfortable and relaxed. I would stay here again
