3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2013 NEW

Stayed here with my wife for a weekend in May 2013. It is an interesting design - oval in shape, with a very small reception, low-level dining area and rooms above. The atrium which the rooms form the cricumference of seems like a lot of wasted space to me and in my opinion doesn't add anything (other than light) to... More

Paid this place another visit at the weekend and was delighted that little had changed. Very busy for lunch at the weekends which is a great sign in todays economic climate. The bar still looks like a scene from 'The Great Gatsby' and James is his usual helpful self. Their winelist is growing from strength to strength with some wonderful... More

Very central in Mullingar, rooms are large and comfortable, breakfast was very good, overall a good stay and very reasonably priced. If we are in Mullingar again, we would certainly look to stay again.

Basic room, clean and large, but the heating system consists of an air con unit which provides warm air really, just not cosy at all, in fact i was shivering in the room most of the time. staff were nice, breakfast was lovely. the reception, dining room and halls are lovely, but i expected rooms would be a little more... We stayed for two nights for a birthday weekend and having read the harsh reviews on this site we were anxious about what we would find on arrival. The hotel is perfectly situated in the centre of Mullingar and there is ample parking at the rear of the hotel for a small cost.We were checked in by the very welcoming and... We booked a quad room. Lovely room.. very clean & comfortable. The receptionist Kerry couldn't have been more helpful. Lovely breakfast in the room (for an additional fee - totally worth it!) The bad reviews on here do not match anything we saw at the hotel. It was excellent in every way! Would recommend it to anyone.

We dropped into the hotel for lunch. when the lunch came out the portion of potatoes was very small, more potatoes were given on request. A second slice of wheaten bread was also requested to accompany the soup ordered as the slice given was a heal of bread. My sister was given one slice then to be charged for her... More

The hotel rooms look nothing like the pictures they provide. Very plain and cold feel, paint peeling off the walls and a very "cheap hostel"-like bathroom. The staff were pleasant but very rarely seen behind the reception desk, we waited there for 10 minutes before someone arrived to check us in! The breakfast nice, but you only get one of... More

My partner and I stayed at the Austin Friar when travelling around Ireland. The service was impeccable and the staff so warm and friendly. We were greeted at reception and offered a drink on arrival then shown to our room with our bags already delivered to our room. We were given travel advice of the town and its surroundings and...
