Let me be clear - if you want a modern 5 star luxury spa this is not for you. What Markree offers instead is a genuine old castle with high ceilings, mahogany panelling and a definite sense of the past. There is a slight quirkiness and the decor may not be completely fresh and modern but everything was perfectly clean,... more

Delighted that you enjoyed your stay so much. Just wanted to say that Mrs Cooper is thrilled that you noticed all her hard work on the garden... it is her pet project!

Few of us can afford Ashford Castle and while Makree isn't Ashford it give an affordable and memorable experience of staying at a 350 year-old castle that won't bankrupt you. This is not a tourist trap - the same family has owned and still does. It finds a great balance between appreciating the history and ruggedness of the castle but... more

The castle is charming, the room large and spacious. It is elegant and relaxing. The beds are comfortable. The bar is everything a bar should be. The restaurant - old world without being stuffy. We can't wait to return! more

I booked a stay in Markree Castle after getting the amazing Gourmet Taster offer of bed, dinner and breakfast for 65 euro per person. I ended up double and triple checking with the hotel because the offer was almost too good to be true. I knew I was in for a treat because I'd seen images of the Castle from... more

The idea of staying in a castle is cool, but I was disappointed with the interior. The decor felt old/worn, the furniture and carpets had obvious signs of worn and looked old. It seems that maybe since the opening of this as a hotel in 1989, the furniture has never been changed or updated. I was a bit disgusted by... more

Our extended family group wanted to stay at a castle - and Markree Castle is wheelchair accessible. Quiet, helpful, great ambiance. Wheelchair room (no steps from elevator) had accessible shower area (although drainage wasn't really adequate - we built dams out of towels), had a nice view, and met our needs. Our party (ranging from pre-teen to senior) was pleased... more

Thanks for the lovely review- it's great that you were able to take advantage of our little wheelchair accessible bedroom. In our opinion it's not used nearly enough! It isn't the nicest room in the house but was, literally, the only room that has no steps up or down to it when it came to installing a wheelchair equiped room....

From the moment I arrived I felt welcome by staff and guests. Easy to find and close to Sligo. Lovely grounds. Never mind the rain bring your wellies and waxed jacket to work up an appetite for dinner. Informal and welcoming. A home from home and your dog is welcome too! Nothing to do what bliss. Bring a book. Stress... more

This is not a Radisson conversion. This is the real deal. A real castle. True, the very large bedroom we had (i.e the "W.B Yeats Room") is not as exquisite as the reception and dining areas downstairs. But is was more than comfotable for our family. The Dining Room is Versailles like, with its high ceilings, mirrors, gilded coving, and... more

If you want manicured perfection, head for Dromoland or Ashford. This one is definitely shabby chic, but clean where it counts. And they have made a recent effort in sprucing up as indicated in a recent blog on the site. What you get is authenticity, history and for those who seek stepping back in time, this is the experience to... more

Thanks for your feedback- as always much appreciated! Just to let you know, we have been listening (!) and have lowered or menu price to €35 for three courses from €45 and have also introduced an a la carte menu- this way there is plenty of choice for everyone in a variety of different price ranges. We also have a...

My 2 friends and I thoroughly enjoyed our recent stay at Markree Castle. It is a fairy tale place and is very close to the many amazing sites and lots of fun activities that county Sligo has to offer. We were given a spectacular room at the top of the castle with 3 beds (so we each had our own),... more
