We ended up at Markree via an offer on twitter and we went for it because we needed to get away that weekend. The location is wonderful and there are enough walks in great grounds to satisfy most people. The castle is impressive and it is wonderful to think that it is owned by the same family for over 400... We stayed here last July with the idea of a romantic break. The weather was terrible. While the castle entrnace is very impressive after that it goes downhill. It was freezing. We seemed to be pretty much the only guests apart from a dusgruntled American family in the lounge in their anoraks. The decor was outdated, late 70s at best.... More

We have just returned from our daughter's wedding and we had a wondewrful experience at Markree. I think the staff are the key. Jeremy, the wedding manager is just incredible in being so helpful in every way. All the reception and bar staff from Emma, Alex James etc just coudn't do enough. Initially we thought the place was a little... More

We stayed for two nights. Our room covered three floors with a sitting room on the lower floor, bathroom on the middle floor and bedroom on the upper floor. It was a little bit chilly but this maybe because of the single glaze windows and the small heater in the room. Upon entering the hotel, we nearly missed the reception... More

This is a grand old castle. Wandering through the grounds and the castle itself was a treat. We stayed in the Johnny Cash room, a huge triple room with uneven, creaky floors, a beautiful bay window overlooking the gardens and a charmingly outdated, but huge, bathroom with an afterthought tiny shower stall and an oddly placed fire exit. I love... More

Have stayed at the Markree twice in recent weeks. It is a real castle steeped in history yet offering a top class hotel experience. Rooms are old fashioned but comfortable. Dogs stay free and with minimum fuss. A perfect stopping off point on the way to Sligo or Galway - depending on where you start from! All bookings have a... More

Myself and my family spent a wonderful weekend at Markree Castle. We were a group of 10 and had 5 rooms. Each of the rooms were different and very pleasant. The decor is a little dated but this adds to the whole experience. The castle has amazing atmosphere complete with the biggest logs in the fire as you enter the... More

We stayed here as a large family group in early March. The location and the castle itself is superb and it's character has been retained. If you want a 5 star experience it is not the place to go, however, if you want to feel almost like you own the place for the duration of your stay this is it.... More

Markree Castle Hotel is a great old castle. The staff are wonderful. It can be a little cool and the furniture is a bit old..but isn't that what you go there for? If you want an authentic castle experience then this is the place..if you are looking for the Hilton..then keep going. We were there for Valentines Day and it... More

Our experience at Markree Castle has been fabulous. Everything is like being in a fairy tale and my little princess (my daughter) enjoyed every part of it: the main hall, the staircase, the fireplace, the corridors, everything... We stayed in the Johnny Cash Room (that is HUGE!) and the view of the gardens from the windows was breathless. Restaurant decorations... More
