Looking for relief from relentless New England winter storms we were eager to get away and delighted that Monte Azul had space for us for a week. We thought we were looking for warm weather. What we found was a magical paradise in the middle of the jungle. Off the beaten track, this is not for everyone. But if you're... More

The Monte Azul folks have truly created an earthly paradise. My recent stay there exceeded my already-high expectations -- for beauty, accommodations, food, the staff, extra services... you name it! The property is gorgeous in every way -- the casitas, the restaurant area, the artist's studio, the lush rainforest. We loved having conversations with the staff people Teo, Melissa and... More

Dear Mariquita131, Music to our ears! Our motto is to exceed expectations at every opportunity. At our scale, with just four casitas, we are given the opportunity to focus our attention on each of our guests. Luxury, to us, is about the experience you describe. Money can by almost anything, but money cannot buy the sincere kindness of our staff... More

We were a part of the Coffee, Chocolate and Cheese Trail tour and thoroughly enjoyed our experience at Monte Azul! The property was stunning and meticulously maintained and the staff made us feel incredibly welcome and made sure our stay was a one-of-a-kind experience. Teo, Melissa and Juan were excellent guides and gave us a true flavor of the region's... More

This was my second trip to Monte Azul and I was fortunate enough to stay for a longer time! Monte Azul keeps getting better. 4 beautiful contemporary cottages are located on the banks of the Rio Chirripo -- each with a private garden and patio. Each casita and all of the public spaces have really interesting contemporary art and hand... More

The Chirripo mountain range is pleasantly nearby some of the tourism centers south of San Jose such as Manuel Antonio, but it feels like a world apart. Monte Azul is a small, boutique resort nestled in an authentic community and rainforest. The animals here are not conditioned to the large groups of tourists that you will find elsewhere. Even so,... Life is full of surprises and the best so far this year was Monte Azul. Carlos and Randy created this perfect Boutique Hotel/Art Gallery in a lusciously green and tranquil piece of land. There is beauty in every detail and the comfort/gourmet food they serve really touch me. There is so much to do, walk the trails, learn or enjoy... More

I chose to stay at Monte Azul because of the variety of activities on offer, booking one of the weeklong packages. I was able to meet and interact with the locals while milking the cheese farmer's cow, having lunch with the coffee farmer and visiting the farmer's market in town. The included massage was a nice surprise (Molly is great),... More

Elliot of CR Custom recommended this place or I would never have found it. It's located in a beautiful, tropical preserve. The staff are all warm and friendly, the food is delicious as well as lovely to look at. We had the best goat cheese ever! Enjoyed seeing the goats and would have liked to see the cheese making. Monte Azul resists categorization and it eludes description. The location is readily accessible by car from San Jose, but it's neither on the coast (Dominical lies across the mountains an hour's winding drive west) nor close to any hot spots that people commonly know by name. Indeed it doesn't fall on any of the beaten paths unless you are on... More
