I chose to stay at Monte Azul because of the variety of activities on offer, booking one of the weeklong packages. I was able to meet and interact with the locals while milking the cheese farmer's cow, having lunch with the coffee farmer and visiting the farmer's market in town. The included massage was a nice surprise (Molly is great),... More

Elliot of CR Custom recommended this place or I would never have found it. It's located in a beautiful, tropical preserve. The staff are all warm and friendly, the food is delicious as well as lovely to look at. We had the best goat cheese ever! Enjoyed seeing the goats and would have liked to see the cheese making. Great... More

Dear Silvia X, I’m glad you found us! Our guests come to Costa Rica looking for that unique experience and usually book directly with us because most agencies tend to send them to the usual tourist spots. Elliot is the exception; we have worked together for several years and he always sends us the loveliest clients. glad we met your... More

Monte Azul resists categorization and it eludes description. The location is readily accessible by car from San Jose, but it's neither on the coast (Dominical lies across the mountains an hour's winding drive west) nor close to any hot spots that people commonly know by name. Indeed it doesn't fall on any of the beaten paths unless you are on... More

I visited Monte Azul with my two best friends on a peaceful girls getaway retreat. Monte Azul was an incredible addition to our itinerary and we are so pleased that we stayed. I have traveled all over Costa Rica and one of the most difficult things to come across is great quality cuisine that is consistent throughout your whole stay.... More

You can't help but feel completely relaxed as soon as you arrive at Monte Azul. The grounds are beautiful and peaceful. The rooms are well decorated and comfortable. The art in the casitas is produced on-site and rotated regularly. This is just one of the many personal touches. Randy--one of the owners--makes all the soaps used at the hotel. The... More

It is really a misnomer to call Monte Azul a mountain retreat, since it is in a valley with a river flowing past. But it is surrounded by mountains, and the peace that such an environment brings. I say peace, because what I thought was the sound of the air conditioning, was actually the sound of the nearby river. Night... More

The food is here the best I have eaten in Costa Rica. I was treated to a tomato soup, watermelon salad, goat cheese stuffed chicken breasts and sorbet for dessert. Everything was homemade, including the cheese that stuffed the chicken... it was a beautiful eating experience.
