Hacienda Baru is just off of the main highway south along the Pacific Coast. It was a functional cattle ranch that has been returned to a more natural state. The grounds are extensive and they have several trails that are good for general hiking as well as bird watching. The room that we had was well appointed, spacious and had... More

We stayed one night in a renovated cabin and enjoyed it. Do not expect fancy high end accommodations here. The cabins are ok - but there is no A/C and no luxury. The fridge in our room was VERY noisy. That said, the surroundings are beautiful. Wildlife is all over the place. The landscaping is very pretty. The pool is... More

We liked the efforts here at preserving the rainforest and the beauty of the spot. The lodging accommodations in the economy cabins were very basic and I wouldn't choose these again. It was hot and the fans just didn't keep us cool; water wasn't hot in the shower, but we didn't complain about that, so I'm sure it could have... More

HB is located just off the beach and within a large reserve. Accommodation is in tastefully done, attached cabins, which is where we stayed, or larger stand alone units that we did not see. There is no AC but fans were adequate for December. The restaurant supplied a good basic breakfast (included) and good value dinners. We took an escorted... More

Very nice, spacious rooms which are actually little buildings. Nice porch, nice grounds and swimming pool. Wifi only in the restaurant/office area. Food was good but the restaurant service was a little slow. Cheap laundry service. great activities: zip lining (fairly tame but fun), tree climbing (rope climbing actually, very unnerving but fun), wildlife walks.

Just off Dominical, on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, this delightful ecolodge is run by Jack Ewing (author of the delightful book Monkeys are Made of Chocolate) and his wife. The cabins are airy, very spacious and appointed with comfortable beds. There is a screened in front porch with rocking chairs and umbrellas (useful in the rainy season); every... More

A great place for families. The cabins are roomy, and have enough to cook for yourself ( or enjoy the great meals at the restaurant). Spend some time in the pool, and you could be treated to a toucan duet - you will certainly spy hummingbirds and tanagers. A alk to the beach takes you past the turtle hatchery. We... More

This was my second visit (first in 2006) and was even more enjoyable. Well-signed off the Costanera Sur, personable staff beginning with the owner, Jack Ewing, who remembered me because of photos I gave him for the website. Spacious cabin with kitchen/fridge. Fans circulated the air nicely at night despite the heat/humidity. The pool is delightful and perfect for lowering... More

This accomodation, run by Jack & Diane (oh yes, from the heartland), is a rustic retreat of cabins on the Central Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, just north of Dominical. Each cabin has a kitchenette, living room, clean linens, screened-in porch and umbrellas for the wet season - very useful. Hacienda Baru offers guided walks on their trails at dawn,... More

The restaurant was great and offered a lot of vegetarian options. We went on two of the tours and enjoyed both. I would definitely recommend the zip-line and canopy climbing tour. The lowland birding tour was OK. We are avid birders and did not feel that our guide for that tour was as knowledgeable although he was very kind and... More
