This was a our second visit to Hacienda Baru and we enjoyed it just as much as last time. A great place to stay, combining a good variety of trails, with decent (if rustic) accommodation, a great pool, on-site restaurant and access to the beach, all at a reasonable price. Although there is room for improvement, this is a pretty... More

Jack Ewing has done a wonderful thing by transforming a former ranch/farm into this jungle wilderness. The cabin we stayed in was a bit tired, but comfortable. The desk staff also seemed tired. However, the self-guided hiking trails were marvelous journeys into unusual ecosystems. The jungle walk with Pedro was fantastic due to his warmth and knowledge The beach is... More

I didn't stay there but I came here 3 days in a row. I saw more animals here than at Manuel Antonio and in a much wilder setting. Caiman, toucan, dolphins... perfect for a nature experience with or without children. I also did the zipline tour "fly of the toucan". It was worth it as you get a guide to... More

The good bits are: Fantastic guides, good honest food (and the best smoothies we had in 3 weeks), reasonably priced, beautiful gardens, great beach but..... The bad bits: you can't swim in the sea (although I did) and it's a fair walk in 35 degrees to the beach, and we stayed in one of the older bungalows for privacy, and... More

My family stayed in one of the superior cabins, which was spacious and clean. The restaurant was nice, reasonably priced and the food was good. We were especially glad that there were vegetarian options. The tours were terrific. The guides on the zip line tour were great at putting us at ease and pointing out the sloths and other critters along... More

Just took "Flight of the Toucan", our last adventure in Costa Rica - what a great finale! I admit to having been extremely nervous about zip lining, but Carlos & Pedro were wonderful, patient, friendly. Carlos is really funny, kept me laughing the whole time. Also very knowledgeable about the flora & fauna...we were lucky enough to be about 20... More

The bungalows are big and clean (eventhough bathroom is small). No glass window so good temperature in the bungalows but at night and in the morning you hear the birds as if they were in the room: Great to hear but a bit noisy to sleep. The park around is very nice with great nature and some animals, the location... More

This hotel is about an hour south of Quepos. The road is in very good shape. We visited this place just because we wanted to watch wild animals up close. As soon as we got there, an employee showed us a baby sloth that was sleeping on a tree close to the parking area. It was awesome. There are three... More

We stayed 5 nights at the Hacienda Baru in November 2012. Cabinas are spacious (we had one of the older ones) with all basic facilities. What we especially liked was the coffee machine and the delicious local coffee we got every day. A nice start into the early morning before having breakfast at 7 a.m. at the very good restaurant... We did not stay at this hotel but visited the beautiful grounds and went on the Zipline tour. Such a gorgeous place. Our guide up the hill was excellent, he was so knowledgable and made it so much fun. Definitely wear bug spray for this hike. The guide pointed out a 2 toed sloth in the tree. He showed us... More
