An amazing place if you love nature. A bonus to stay here and relax into it. My son did zip lining (fairly tame compared to the massive ones in Monteverde) and loved it - he also saw more on the walk up with the zipline guys than he did in 3 hours at Manuel Antonio. I wish we had a... More

We visited Hacienda Baru for two bird walks. Our excellent guide, David, pointed out rare birds, taught us about the history of that area of Costa Rica, and even did bird calls! He was knowledgable, very helpful (even suggesting an alternative walk route since we were short on time) and quite funny and friendly. The grounds of this nature center... More

This is not really a rating for the hotel, but for the hacienda itself, and the zip-lining experience that the hotel offers. This sanctuary that was once a plantation has been converted for eco-tourism, and its undergoing re-forestration. There is a very provincial feel to their cottage facilities, but i did not lodge here. i visited for a zip-lining experience,... More

We love Hacienda Baru! We can make our own pot of coffee and watch birds in the early morning. The day is spent walking trails and cooling in the pool before sunset on the beach. It is a great place to fully unwind and immerse and not drive or participate in the outside world. That does bring the constructive criticism-since... More

This fantastic place in Costa Rica is a tribute to the wonders of nature. Jack Ewing and staff have done a superb job of providing a haven for flora and fauna in this beautiful setting on the coast. It was a pleasure to meet Jack after having read his marvelous book, "Monkeys are Made of Chocolate." We stayed three nights... More

Located about 3 hours from San Jose, this is a great place if your looking to get off the grid. The owner, Jack Ewing, has gone to great lengths to maintain this natural setting, while making it accessible as well. A great little oasis away from everything..

Stayed here for a few days in a two room cabin. No A/C, but the temperature was beautiful and there is ceiling fans. You can make fresh coffee in your room daily. Screened in porch area for relaxing and listening to the night sounds or leaving your wet sandals. Abundance of wildlife freely roaming the area, beach in walking distance... More

Has everything: walking trails, two toed sloths, long sandy beach, friendly staff, comfortable cabins and rooms, good food at restaurant, zip line, guided walks, capuchin monkeys, pool, iguanas, and lots of birds. Since there was only wifi in the restaurant and office area we were able to enjoy the natural surroundings without being tethered to the Internet. We stayed in... More

We had a spacious room with a large shower room, a few steps across the grass from the swimming pool. The staff are friendly and helpful, and we enjoyed good Costa Rican food in the restaurant. When I ordered a banana flambe, there was a dramatic show of turning off the lights and pouring a good quantity of alcohol over... More

My husband and I traveled through Costa Rica on a recent birding trip (2015) with another couple. At another birder's urging, we booked a few nights at Hacienda Baru.
