One step above tent camping and one step below staying in an rv. Just the necessities, all rather worn. Bed was not comfortable and sheets and towels frayed. But it was essentially clean and provided a very convenient place to crash after hiking. Winter hours for adjacent cafe are very inconvenient for tourists since they open almost too late (9am)... Step back to an earlier time where there isn't a chain store for 50-100 miles. Located in the *very* small community of Portal, the lodge makes a comfortable base for exploring, birding, and hiking a beautiful area. Fancy or frilly it isn't, but if you are happy with simple and clean rooms, a nice deck and access to their cafe... More

Visit was great location, staff was courteous, room was clean. The restaurant was convenient, menus were simple, but the food was nutritious and tasty. The place is a bit rustic, but part of the charm. I do like the way the rooms are set up; in two lines facing each other with a central common space porch .

Our group was pleased overall with our visit to the Portal Peak Lodge. If you want to visit the Chiricahua Mountains for birding, there are not very many places to stay, and this lodge is well located. The facilities are quite spartan, but comfortable, clean and adequate. We were especially impressed by the staff, who made every effort to be... More

If you want to visit or hike the Chiricahua mountains in southeast AZ, this is an excellent choice. Book early as there are 16 rooms. They have nice, comfortable, and quiet rooms. They serve meals and the food is good. They even have a selection of beer and wine. I stayed for 2 nights, went hiking on the 2nd day,... More

We are out in the sticks (sorry, US readers - miles from anywhere) and we have this quite special place. The town is relatively isolated, several miles from anywhere, on a flat plain with amazing mountains nearby. And with a very small population, why would you not want to stay here? The cabins are basic and comfortable - probably the... More

Not much in Portal, but this was comfortable and close to birding and National Monument. Room had two double beds, table and 2 chairs. Microwave in room. No Tv. Hummingbird feeders in front of the rooms. Quiet. Clean. Restaurant on site. Pretty good food. Reserve early, they fill up fast.

This room had plenty of space and two beds for my friend and I. The room looked clean and beds were comfortable. The only downside was a rather large cockroach in the tub. I only saw the one, but that's the reason for a 3 rating. Breakfast Sunday morning was very good. Lots of character in this small settlement. Beautiful... More

Stopped here today for lunch. Great variety of menu items so each of the four of us had different meals. Save room for dessert. We loved visiting with other guests. We will certainly return for another scenic tour.
