the rooms have 2 double beds, a table and 2 chairs. my room had a microwave and in-room coffee. the room has good lighting by the sink for reading. no tv but good wifi. great place to view the stars and to hike and to birdwatch. only complaint- rooms are overpriced. but everything in the area is priced high due... Traveling the back roads of Arizona, we came across the Portal Peak Lodge. Made reservations and told that they would be closed for the week of Xmas.. No problem.. they put the key under the mat and would take care of us when we checked out.. The night of arrival it was a little hard finding the lodge as it... More

I didn't stay at the lodge as I went backpacking up Cave Creek Canyon. My colleague did stay the night and was very happy with the simple rooms- 'all you need'. The breakfast was simply superb! Very unexpected for this remote part of the world and the local herpetologist joined us, sharing all his local knowledge of where to find... More

The rooms are pretty basic. Apparently (by reading other reviews) there are some differences. My room had in-room coffee and a microwave, but no refrigerator (might be worth asking if one is available if you need a refrigerator). The wifi was surprisingly good. It is clean, and yes, it is aging, but is in good repair. The bed was comfortable.... More

Basic comfortable rooms with restaurant service for dinner and breakfast. Good place to stay for hiking and birding in the unique Sky Island mountains of SE Arizona. Clean, restaurant has good basic food and service is thoughtful. No pool, but real bathtubs. Wish I'd had a refrigerator in my room. You'll hear early risers because of the layout and wood... More

We spent 5 nights at this hotel with a birding group. This is the only place in a remote area where you can stay and also be fed. The rooms are very basic, but the beds are comfortable and it is clean. The food was better than we expected.

Birders don't really need luxury. We are used to roughing it a bit. But most of us pay real attention to detail and notice when the room needs a little help. The rooms are indeed pretty basic. That is OK. But when the sheets are so old that they are practically transparent maybe it is time to retire them. A... More

We loved the setting of the Portal Peak Lodge and the room met all our needs. It does feel like a bit of a flashback experience but the frig and microwave were nice additions. I can't really overstate how isolated this place is. The restaurant and store have limited hours and vary greatly with the season. I would highly recommend... More

Great location for your birding experience in Portal. Very nice service, but the rooms are old and very basic. For the money they charge one can expect a bit more. Be sure to visit the restaurant, the food is really good there.

the rooms are all the same. they are comfortable, with 2 beds, a table, 2 chairs, alarm clock and small bathroom. the rooms are very clean. the walls are thin, but usually everyone goes to bed early because there's nothing to do after dark and no tvs in the rooms, so it's quiet for sleeping. the wall unit for heat...
