My wife and I stayed here in the last week of March, 2009 but other business has prevented me from having time to write about it until now, two months later. We had read the reviews on this site and some other sites about the quaintness and about how the bartender's specialty was blackberry mojitos, and of course the thrill... more

The good--We stayed here while my SO went to a conference. The location couldn't have been better--right on the light rail and minutes away from the Heard Museum, Art Museum etc... He could walk to the convention center in 5 minutes. Nice pool area. The rooms are indeed small but that didn't bother me. Staff is friendly and helpful. We... more

Stayed at the Hotel San Carlos for 2 nights recently and was disappointed. Rooms are very small, decor and electronics in room very outdated. Bathroom was probably the worst I have ever stayed in because it was so small and because of the uneven water temperature every time one of us showered. I kept expecting the tub to fall through... more

I realize that this is an old hotel, and since I live in a home that is even older, I can appreciate some "quirkiness". However, this so called hotel is the worst place I have ever stayed in. The first room (yes, we moved as soon as possible) had a bathroom that was so narrow that when you bent over... more

I was in Phoenix for a convention and tried to save my organization some money since I do not share a room. While somewhat cheaper than the Sheraton, Hyatt, et al., the San Carlos can always fill because of overflow and overbooking at surrounding hotels. It is Historic and it is OLD, too. One of my colleagues did experience a... more

Visiting downtown Phoenix for a conference this is a much more pleasant option than the big commercial hotels. The rooms were large and well furnished, the location is fantastic. But it is the friendly, helpful staff that make this a great place to stay. more

We stayed here while visiting town for a friend's wedding. This hotel wasn't the closest but we wanted to check out the downtown area while we were here, and stay at a "haunted" hotel. Nothing supernatural happened to us while at this hotel, but to be fair we were only here one night. The rooms were just big enough for... more

I just spent 5 days straight without a hot shower, look-cool would be the term I would use for water temp. My bathroom was the smallest I have ever seen with barely enough room to get in and close the door. Room smelled like an old gym locker room, thin walls, gappy doors vents, very noisy. Believe it or not,... more

I am not the pickiest traveler but I do enjoy a nice hotel. This was listed as a 3 star and it couldn't have been further from that. It was a complete no-frills hotel if I have ever seen one before. Everything was old and there really wasn't one nice thing I can say about it after I left or... more

The good news: excellent location, clean rooms, friendly staff, rooftop pool, good price. The bad news: tiny bathroom, luke warm shower, tired restaurant. Depends on how charming you find the old gal. more
