This little place is in the middle of nowhere on the way to el Chalten but surprisingly lovely. I had a ham and cheese sandwich which was really good. It was made on lovely thick white bread. As you get closer to El Chalten the vista just gets better and better. You can see the glaciers and peaks and can't stop taking photos. Be sure to stop at Hotel de Campo La Leona to see the sign with all the mileage markers to major cities. Plus you can get a bite to eat or drink.

Over the years I have visited the wonderful Leona many times. Some years ago I even worked there to pay for my stay. The owners of the property are the Saldia Westerlund family who have a fascinating history at La Leona. Anita Saldia Westerlund brought the property to life in 1995 and it remains her property to this day. As... More

La Leona is an often overlooked Patagonian landmark, located at a spot where prior to the building of a bridge recently, sheep and cattle herders would have to wait sometimes days to cross the River Leona with their many animals, on their way to the markets in the big cities on the coast.
