This hotel has lovely grounds, albeit not huge, which have been filled with eclectic items. The rooms are large and well appointed and the al fresco tea/coffee/cookies fridge set up unusual but appealing. The restaurant was nicely set-up and the food was inventive and well presented. as we found everywhere in South Africa the service was friendly and helpful to... More

We stayed one night at this lovely inn. We were welcomed on arrival and taken to our charmingly rustic cottage room, where we had a massive king sized bed and a single in a big room with seating area, TV and a couple of comfortable arm chairs. The bathroom was equally delightful with a whirlpool tub and separate shower, and... More

We only stayed one night at this hotel which is in a beautiful setting. The room was excellent and the welcome acceptable. However, the bed was like sleeping on the floor and the top sheet had holes in it - very poor! The food was also dismal, it was cold and undercooked. The choice of starter was limited to one... A few kilometres out of town but a quaint stay in individual cottages with en suite. Great evening meal in the large country dining room with open wood fires for cooking. The Lodge uses produce from their own garden and gives the visitor a chance to try local meats including ostrich. A different stay from the normal hotel or motel... More

Touring in South Africa 5 We departed Cape Town on a cool wet morning heading East through Cape Flats and climbing into the mountains where we were to pass through a five kilometre tunnel into a completely different world. Gone was the lush semi tropical fields, instead we found a land with vertical rock strata rising it seemed into the... More

We stayed for 2 nights at the beginning of September. The rooms are a little old fashioned in decor but our rooms were clean and hot water wasn't a problem. The rooms were cold, but each room had a wood burner with a basket of logs [we had 3 rooms] which was quite cosy. Although they do charge for extra... More

T. I agree with the last reviewer, this could be really great with a lot of work. We'd been traveling and staying in hotels in Kenya and S. Africa before we got here and this hotel was the most disappointing one. We had just come from Hunter's Country House in Plettenburg Bay which was an amazingly updated lodge. De Opstal... More

It is a bit sad one this is. It could be so great and it is not. Everything is pretty musky, dark and dusty. The rooms we had were not clean, cobwebs everywhere, insects etc, that I felt uncomfortable, least they can do is spray the rooms. No hot water so no showers for us. The room was also cold,... More

The hotel is clearly a lovely place to stay in summer but in August (winter in s.a) it is very very cold in the rooms. They had a coach party in so there was insufficient space to chill in the lounge pre or post dinner. The food is buffet style and ok but actually nothing special. The breakfast was better.... More

When you arrive you see the well kept gardens with lovely white painted buildings... These are the rooms and we had two next to each other with raised patio stoop areas that you can sit on as the sun sets and the wine flows..... A gorgeous location to give a stress free relaxing time. I went running around the back... More
