My partner was excited to go for lunch at what he remembered to be a beautiful and quant restaurant - not so much! We ended up only having a cooldrink as the a la carte menu didn't look very exciting and the buffet was pretty disgusting. I wouldn't recommend visiting this restaurant or town anytime soon unfortunately!

We have stayed here on for three nights over the New Year, we have stayed here twice now and on both occasion's had rooms in the Bank House (at our request) although we have seen the other rooms and all are very nice, the restaurant food is very good, the hotel gives you a sign for the car to stop... We stopped here for a buffet lunch on our tour of South Africa. We did not want the full 3 course lunch, so just ate from the excellent Salad Bar followed by a good choicer of home made sweets. Entertainment came after the meal when the waitresses and kitchen staff sang for us (and passed round a collection plate!)

My family and I have always enjoyed staying at The Royal Hotel in Pilgrims Rest. We have been regular visitors since at least 2001. The hotel is set in a most beautiful part of the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa, within the village Pilgrims Rest which is a living museum to a large extent. There are no televisions or telephones... More

Staff are unfriendly, not professional and prefer to loiter around outside chatting and smoking rather than being of service. Our waitress in the dining room wanted to dump us at an unset table in the corner as she was only interested in the foreign tour groups and not the local patron & after taking our drinks order, was never seen... I've stayed at some bad hostels/hotels in my lifetime but the Royal Hotel definitely ranks in the top 3 of the worst places I have stayed in my life. We stayed in the bank house which as separate stand alone room. The room (and the hotel as a whole) was old, dilapidated and in serious need of renovation. The room... More

Stopped here with a party for lunch. Buffet style service. The salad bar had a very good choice all well presented. The main course was a choice of two items Roast Beef or Vegetarian option. The sweets were home made and delicious. At the end of the meal the staff sang some local songs. It was a memorable lunch.

My husband and I were visiting the hotel's restaurant for a late lunch. When the waiter brought our food we indicated that the meat tasted and smelled off. The waiter called the chef who said they had received and prepared the meat for that day but said he was willing to hear us out and take a different order. The... More

The Royal caters to tour groups and buffet meals. I know it is cultural not to smile at strangers but staff can be trained. The kitchen staff came out into the dining room and sang three native spiritual songs. At the start of the third song, one member put her hat on the table of a nearby diner with seed... More

we stayed in an old restored cottage, 3 separate rooms with en-suites and Victorian baths. rooms were clean, (m2-4). they do require a little attention we had mildew on one of the bathroom ceilings. it was new years eve, we had the buffet @ R135, with wonderful salads and very good hotel food, nice variety. breakfast was adequate with disinterested...
