Hotel is in keeping with the Wild West feel of the whole town which was gold prospecting town at the turn of the 20th Century... tin roofed, clapboard walls and white picket fences. Twin room (in Nutmeg annex) spacious, well appointed (good shower pressure .. yippee!) though decor was so floral it left me cross-eyed! Restaurant had a wild west... more

Very cozy rooms, there isn't much to do in this town but it's near to Blyde River Canyon and you can stop there going to the Kruger. more

The gold ran out about thirty years ago. What to do with this old mining town in the far eastern mountains of SA next? Turn the whole kit and kaboodle into a tourist attraction of course! This very small mountain town is a South African National Park of sorts. The locals expected the gold to last a decade--it ended up... more

This is one of the most cute and quirky places I have every stayed. It's like walking back in time but with all the mod cons. I would recommend it to anyone! more

Prepare to step back in time if you stay here. Its a one horse town. No tv, phone, clock ...... It has a quaint old world charm with its lanterns and candles, like sleeping at your grandmothers in days gone by. We only stayed one night and had comfortable twin beds with an old type stand alone bath and flowery... more

The Victorian thing? Not my style. South Africa's mining history? Not my interest..that said, I was here for a wedding, and had a wonderful time. The hotel itself is a terrific bargain...I did not have any issues with the facility, the staff was sweet (Justice, one of the waiters, was such a sunny personality and a gracious professional!) and the... more

Our South African friends were taking us on a tour of their country, which gave us one night of "rest" at Pilgrim's Rest on our trip, a museum gold mining town. Having lived in Victorian properties, the Victorian style was familiar to us so we were not so impressed by the hotel, whereas if you haven't experienced that sort of... more

I stayed with two friends in two rooms in an annex across from the main hotel. Both rooms were damp and I had to place a towel on my mattress to stop the damp coming through the sheets. The hotel website says it has recently been refurbished - well that must have been in 1973 when they stopped mining there.... more

Stayed just one night, but would have happily stayed more. The whole town is preserved as it was from gold mining days, except for all the cars and souvenir stalls. The hotel was excellent. We had booked a suite at a fabulous rate (double, twin, lounge, bathroom and wc) which turned out to be in an 'annexe'. The annexe was... more
