What looks like the old fashioned tin shack - is actually the Real Tin Shack that existed during the gold rush in South Africa. Obviously you are sleeping in a Historical Monument that has certainly upgraded since many years ago. BUT still the charm of the rooms the wonderful and cheerful staff make your stay a pleasure. The food was... More

On a recent holiday to Kruger Park we were four families who stayed at the Royal Hotel for two nights. Based on some reviews we were slightly hesitant to stay at the hotel, but because it fell over a long weekend most places in the area were fully booked. On arrival our initial impression of Pilgrims rest was not very... More

Splendid decor, well located, delightful accommodation and privacy in cottage, value for money, ambiance - just delightful overall, could have stayed longer and a MUST return establishment for exploring the many beautiful sights in the area! Loved the garden and verandah!

We stayed for one night at one of the cottages at the end of May this year as we needed wheelchair access. The staff had obviously gone to great lengths to try and make the cottage and Hotel as accessible as possible, and we were delighted with the décor and furnishings and ease of access in the cottage. We were to... More

This really is a living museum. We were in a house a little way from the main hotel and we had no problem getting around in the wheelchair. An overnight stop is probably not long enough if you are interested in the history of the area. Perhaps a return visit in the future is called for !

First of all one needs to understand that virtually every other building in the historical village of Pligrim's Rest seems to be an "extension of the Royal Hotel" - at least thats what they put on them. That means, whenever you read reviews about that place, you are not really sure where people stayed at. We stayed right in the... More

We stayed in a family suite and loved the period detail in the room, v impressed with how clean and comfortable it was. The food is good value but v old fashioned and plain.Good place to stop off at en route elsewhere, not really worth spending more than a night.

Stayed for one night in December. Place is very traditional built of corrugated sheets, Rooms were comfy with baths and generally clean and tidy. Decor is straight out of the English Africa of the 1900 s. Staff were really nice and a very good breakfast was served. Only let down was the bar which was old and presented well but... More

I stayed in the cottage with my partner's family and it was unlike any accommodation I've stayed in before - it was as if we had stepped back in time. Lovely lodgings, however given the age of the furnishings, the bed was very squeaky if I moved at all. Lovely view from the porch and I would stay here again... More

After flying to Johannesburg we drove a cuople of hours to this hotel. It is part of a historical museum to the gold panning years in S Africa. The hotel 'house' was a replica of a historical house but had really comfortable beds, a kettle for a cup of tea/coffee and was really spacious. The restaurant and bar which is... More
