In all my travels I have never been so disappointed in a property, like I am with the Royal Hotel. The staff are unprofessional and rude with no idea of guest services. They advertise falsely – there is NO secure parking! You park in the street and put a piece of paper in the car asking the town folk not... More

We loved this hotel! We felt as though we'd stepped back in time especially when we were shown our bedroom! Lovely comfy bed, white linen, plenty of towels, roll top bath, old fashioned drapes, tea and coffee making facilities and a couple of handmade biscuits! The lounge area was much the same, beautifully decorated and furnished. Some of the wallpaper... More

We stayed for two nights at this historical hotel. The rooms were clean and the bed comfortable. The food was disastrous - Same tough beef-roll for two nights in a row - and I mean tough!! There were no variation in the soup (hearty vegetable soup) vegetables and puddings (milk tart, chocolate mousse) Breakfasts were also well below standard and... More

This hotel is old fashioned and lovely. It's located in a town that is also old fashioned and lovely (and a heritage site). It's like something out of an old movie. Our family room accommodation was pretty much a small cottage with two rooms, a lounge and bathroom. It's neat and clean but nothing fancy. The cottage is situated across... More

My partner was excited to go for lunch at what he remembered to be a beautiful and quant restaurant - not so much! We ended up only having a cooldrink as the a la carte menu didn't look very exciting and the buffet was pretty disgusting. I wouldn't recommend visiting this restaurant or town anytime soon unfortunately!

We have stayed here on for three nights over the New Year, we have stayed here twice now and on both occasion's had rooms in the Bank House (at our request) although we have seen the other rooms and all are very nice, the restaurant food is very good, the hotel gives you a sign for the car to stop... We stopped here for a buffet lunch on our tour of South Africa. We did not want the full 3 course lunch, so just ate from the excellent Salad Bar followed by a good choicer of home made sweets. Entertainment came after the meal when the waitresses and kitchen staff sang for us (and passed round a collection plate!)

My family and I have always enjoyed staying at The Royal Hotel in Pilgrims Rest. We have been regular visitors since at least 2001. The hotel is set in a most beautiful part of the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa, within the village Pilgrims Rest which is a living museum to a large extent. There are no televisions or telephones... More

Staff are unfriendly, not professional and prefer to loiter around outside chatting and smoking rather than being of service. Our waitress in the dining room wanted to dump us at an unset table in the corner as she was only interested in the foreign tour groups and not the local patron & after taking our drinks order, was never seen... I've stayed at some bad hostels/hotels in my lifetime but the Royal Hotel definitely ranks in the top 3 of the worst places I have stayed in my life. We stayed in the bank house which as separate stand alone room. The room (and the hotel as a whole) was old, dilapidated and in serious need of renovation. The room... More
