We were very disappointed with our stay at Hippo Hollow. When we checked in the bed in our room was covered in ants. We went back to reception who suggested we check the room next door...same problem. We ended up checking 5 rooms in total - all with the same problem before someone told us the thatched roofs were infested... more

We only stayed here two nights sadly. Food was excellent, staff were very helpful, accomodation was great. Viewed hippos by the river and at our room window and glimpsed crocs in the river. Entertainment was good. Would happily return one day. Rooms could do with a little artificial ventilation. more

Fabulous hotel in a beautiful setting on the Sabie river, with lush gardens. We stayed in a roomy thatched cottage with a large wooden balcony overlooking the river. We arrived directly from Johannesburg airport and the place is just fantastic. Beautiful rooms and accommodation. Nice service. A good restaurant. A visit of 4 hippos between first and second services. The area around is really unique. We only regret that we stayed there only one night. more

Basic accommodation in a "lodge". Clean but no phone and no TV or A/C. There was a ceiling fan. Some basic self catering equipment - not sure why. Restaurant was very good. Stayed 10 nights in Jul in a bungalow on the riverfront. Rooms were nice with a bedroom on a mezzanine floor and double shower. There was a large terrace overlooking the Sabie River with bbq. As a travel agent I feel I can give a pretty fair assessment having fortunately stayed at many hotels across the world. Hippo Hollow's rating as a 3* hotel is accurate but is made better in its class because of it's location. Only 10 minute drive to the nearest Kruger gate and more than a fair chance of seeing hippo's... more
