The accommodation is fairly rustic, but good value for money, and pretty good for a backpackers. Everything's clean and warm, though. Where the lodge really shines is in how helpful the staff are, and in how well they facilitate tours through the region. We did the Lesotho day trip, which was an experience I'll never forget. The common room is... More

Hi, thank you for taking time to review us. The Backpacking concept is still new to most South Africans who are used to hotels, selfcatering cottages, lodges etc. We have always tried to market 'backpacking' to locals ,as it is a way of exploring their home country at affordable rates whilst meeting foreigners from all over the world and also... My first visit to the establishment and it conforms to the profile of backpacker's hostel completely. Its clean and rustic with minimal frills. The people are more often than not interesting and from highly varied origins. The rules are also simple. Cook and clean up after yourself with mindfulness of others. The accommodation is basic and luxury is not in... More

We were looking for just a room, but they were full so had to take a cabin. It was just average and more money than we wanted to spend, but the view from the common viewing area was nice and the fireplace in the common area was welcoming. We heard from others in the rooms that several of them had... More

Thank you for your review. Rooms do not have a habit of leaking at Sani Lodge but we cannot control freak weather. We are seeing global warming in action! This past summer delivered two particularly severe hailstorms that did a lot of damage to thatch, and caused leaking in places that in the history of Sani Lodge's 23 years have... More

Was welcomed immediately, pointed to our camping spot away from the main house but with everything necessary nearby. Ablutions and scullery. Very friendly and helpful staff. Arrived with wet wood for our braai so the neighbour helped us out. Pristine camping ablutions, good camp ground. Close to Underberg and Sani Pass which was ideal for us.

I spent a few days there and every day had its very own highlight. And everything is embedded in the beautiful green and rural site and the friendly and helpful staff, assisting you choosing and setting up your adventures. The dorms are quite small, nice equipped and clean, so are the bathrooms. The rondavels are just amazing, I enjoyed it... More

The rondavals are very rustic and had never stayed in one before and it was more than efficient. The grounds are natural and the little diner/shop cosy. Although it was raining when we left for Sani Pass it was sunny and hot up at the top. But don't be fooled when the mist arrived was quite chilly so take note... More

Thank you for your review. The rondavels as described in the file in the room, are handmade in true Zulu fashion from pole and dagga with thatched roofing, all materials being sourced from our own property and locally. This provides the best form of insulation for the climate here and also provides work for local people who maintain the buildings... More

We stopped by, just before starting the Sani Pass climb. We wanted to make sure we'll have some food with us and maybe see something different before we leave South Africa and head for Lesotho (for a few days). Indeed we bought several craft items, some excellent home-made cookies and even a great home-made ice-cream. The place is lovely -... More

We stayed at Sani Lodge for 3 nights to discover the southern Drakensberg Mountains. From the very first to the last minute, our stay was simply remarkable. We stayed at the Aloe Cottage, which is one of three self-catering cottages. It was super cozy, quite spacious and very well-equipped - perfect for families with up to 2 children! While the... More

My boyfriend and I stumbled across Sani Lodge on a recent road trip in S.Africa. The common room is very cosy and I felt right at home instantly, the kitchen clean and well equipped with beautiful views of the Drakensburg. I couldn't recommend enough going on a tour with 'Drakensburg Adventures' who operate from the lodge. Our guide Philip was... More

We spent one night only at the lodge, the rondavel was nice, and the people very sweet. What we appreciate the most was the two days trip in Lesotho( poney treck), organized by Sani Lodge. We had the best tour guide ever: Matthew William, a very passionated guy, who's been working in Lesotho for 10 years. He knows a lot... More
