I was delighted to stay at Essenwood House, a gracious, spacious and welcoming B&B in Durban. John & Paddy are warm and helpful hosts and their staff looked after me with quiet attentiveness. Nothing was too much trouble. Paddy's love of colour and fabric bring a liveliness to each room within the house, and the space, light and attention to... More

My friend and I stayed two nights at Essenwood House in a whirlwind trip around South Africa. We stayed at many other places along the way but were by far the happiest at Essenwood House. The proprietor and staff could not have been more charming or helpful. The property is gorgeous, and our room was incredibly comfortable. The huge bathtub... More

It is always a pleasure to return to Essenwood House to enjoy the comfort and hospitality of John and Paddy. They are always there to welcome us and concerned about our comfort and well being. After taking part in the Comrades marathon, again, we were welcomed with a substantial cup of hot soup to replenish our tired bodies. Essenwood house... More

We have stayed at this guest house twice this year and have enjoyed both occasions. The rooms are lovely, overlooking a pretty garden with pool. Nice big bathrooms. John is a caring host while the staff are kind and accommodating. The English breakfast is good and nicely presented, including the morning newspaper. There is WiFi but not the strongest reception.... More

Booked two nights during march but stayed five nights In two very large and spacious rooms. Try for an upstairs room as they offer great Views of Durban. John is an extremely good host and can offer great recommendations for the local restaurants. Butchers boys and the nearby Italian were our favourite. All in all excellent accommodation at a very... So glad that you enjoyed your stays with us. Sorry about the reception, there are a few blind spots in the house which we have rectified! Always good to hear from our guests, good as well as bad, luckily most guests seem to enjoy their stay with us which is very gratifying Best wishes, John chance More

Stayed 3-nights at Essenwood House and wow what a great place. From pre-booking via email to my arrival, and the stay itself, the owners John and Paddy made me feel very welcome.
