I had thr unfortunate experience of having to stay at the Royal Hotel for a week. This is why 1. Breakfast - hot meals (sausage etc) was cold; fruit were off 2. Carpets are never vacumed. Came accross dog poop three days in a row 3. Housekeeping is terrible. They dont really clean anything 4. Reception is useless. We werent... More

Its sad that I write this but the public needs to know...This establishment used to be the only 5 star hotel around. Currently with its pathetic service and cracked floor tiles its the direct opposite. Its not at all maintained. From the parking lot you can see the building is cracking and falling apart The interior corridor is the same... More

The hotel is old and in need of an upgrade, espacially the bathroom which showed shoddy repairs. A group of schoolkids stayed on the same floor and they were very noisy up until about 01:00 in the morning. The pool deck was closed and looked derelict. Breakfeast was very average at best.

While living and working in Durban up until the end of 1991, I enjoyed many pleasurable business and private occasions at this then popular hotel. The venues of note were the Top 'O the Royal,a cocktail bar with impressive views of the harbour, now office space. The Pool Deck provided drinks and light meals to residents and walk-in patrons. The Royal... More

Due to fond memories of The Royal Hotel in Durban, we decided to visit it again during our recent visit to this city. What a disappointment it was. The hotel is being poorly kept and managed; the classy and classic decor had been changed to poor style kitsch interior. The once perfect memorable cuisine in now bland everyday stuff. The... More

We had a Excellent time at the Royal. We had a Beautiful Room over looking the Habour. We went on a Cruise Ship and it was Close the the Habour and central for site seeing. The transport system Buses services is very good and economical and all the site seeing destination close by.

Hotel is not in the part of town that you really want to be staying in. Thou in saying that, I did walk around, during the day only, and had no problems and felt safe enough. The hotel advertises wi-fi, but charges extra for that. The gym is no longer, the sauna and spa are also extras, and the pool... More

We stayed over in peak period and honestly this was the best value for money stay we had in Durban. The room had great harbour views and the staff were friendly. The cleaning staff were very competent and helpful. Under new management the Hotel is being revamped and it is improving. The room we stayed in was Huge with a... More

This used to be the hotel to stay at, the welcoming top hatted doorman, when that was missing I should have known. The rooms were clean, but the plumbing in the two rooms we had booked both needed attention, not serious, but this is four stars, the A/C, what A/C. Dinner was a disappointment. Breakfast started well with a fairly... More

We decided to spend a few days in Durban before the Christmas holiday makers flooded the area and wanting a view of the harbor, we booked in at the Royal. It's a four star hotel that was once graced by Queen Elizabeth herself. She's a grand olde dame that hints at a luxuriant past that is fast fading into the... More
