I was born and raised in Durban, and this was my fourth trip back to the city after I emigrated to the states in the early 70s. At the time I left, the Hotel Edward had a legendary reputation so I decided to give it a try, booking in for three nights before I relocated to a bed and breakfast... more

I booked this hotel for 3 nights, from november 28 to december 1 but after the first night I decided to quit. These are the main reasons: As they want you to say, lets' start with the HOT features: - Comfy beds - REALLY good selection of food at restaurant for dinner and breakfast - Educate staff Let's go on... more

No-one goes to Durban as a tourist. It's a dangerous city, and it isn't attractive. You're there to see family, or you're there (like me) on business. If the latter, the Edward is as good as anywhere. It's on the Esplanade North, you can get a room (like mine) with a sea view, it's secure, the staff are well trained.... more

I was recently down in Durban for business reasons. As a Prokard holder I chose this hotel. The location is difficult as Durban's Marine Parade (beach front area) has such a bad name. It is however right over the road from the beach and the view is as good as it gets in Durban, it is really central and certainly... more

Great price, great service, great location. Has so much more personality than the Hilton down the road. The location is perfect for the beach and seafront restaurants. more

Bear in mide that Durban is just about the most dreadful seaside town on the planet..then decide where you have to stay here. This hotel is the best in town - which is not saying a great deal - but it is friendly and comfortable. We witnessed 2 muggings outside the front door - that's Durban for you...suggest Umshlanga Rocks... more

We never planned to stay here but having found the accommodation we booked to be awful, damp and out in the suburbs, the Protea Edward was a welcome sight. The hotel is a quality hotel with helpful porters knowledgable on the area, where to go etc and whilst our room was clean, the bed measured 4 ft which for a... more

We were well greeted by friendly staff but this was spoiled almost immediately by a warning that we should not leave the hotel on foot as it was far too dangerous! Locals might argue differently but for a couple of tired tourists, hardly the perfect greeting. Having been warned to use the room safe (crime again) we discovered that it... more

The Protea Hotel is a fine hotel and has definitely earned their 4 star status. I was impressed with the level of service and would recommend this hotel. I would have given a 5 star rating but I had problems with the way they have designed their bath/shower. The shower screen was inadequate and meant every shower; water would go... more

I don't know where to start. The hotel staff is the best I have ever encounter anywhere. Can a staff be too attentive? If this hotel were in New York, I could not afford to stay here. An old hotel , but like aged wine. Maintained so well and located right on the beach. The dinning room is elegant and... more
