The hotel is very old school, and pulls it off with a modicum of success. The ambience is homely and elegant. Staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Complimentary porter and valet service adds to the old school attention to detail. The food is great, proper Durban mutton curry as one would expect to see, with a chef that actually understands... One of the oldest "Ladies" of hotel properties in Durban the Edward Protea Hotel, whilst with all the tradition and history could do with some work on their rooms. The staff on arrival were exceptionally professional and as a Protea Hotel Gold card holder I received the welcome that befits a hotel of this nature. The room was comfortable, but... More

Checking in fast and efficient. Our room overlooking the front onto the ocean. Very busy but did not bother us. Very solid furnishings. Housekeeping top notch. The breakfast was varied and lots of choices. the staff were very friendly and helpful. The seating areas were very comfy. Nice to order coffee whilst reading the newspaper. A very old fashioned but... More

The hotel improved its service in the restaurant since our last visit. Generally the hotel was good and food was good. The chefs were slow during breakfast and there was a long queue of people waiting for eggs and omellets. Check in and check out were still the best experience. Housekepping remained a challenge. Housekepping staff did not maintain the... More

A beautiful 'old' colonial style hotel on the Durban seafront. Staff are very professional and friendly. Good variety of food and drink, with a buffet style help yourself at breakfast and dinner in the evening. Breakfast on Sunday was at 3.00am for Comrades entrants and still the staff smiled !!! Rooms are comfortable and have all that is needed for... More

I stayed here for my first visit to the country to run the Comrades marathon, and was very impressed. Great service, good food, clean. Can't beat the location, across from beaches and a little carnival. Would definitely return.

On my recent visit to Durban, I didn't manage to book accommodation as I didn't know which date I would be travelling. I pitched up at the Protea Hotel and just happen to run into the hotel manager. Even though the hotel was fully booked, he managed to arrange accommodation for me for the night. The staff was very well... More

We went to this hotel from 01 to 03 May 2015 and had an awesome service. I can't fault them on anything. Their service is on point. Something to improve on is the parking arrangements and to get the security personnel able to communicate in English as not everyone understands the local language.

We had a wonderful two night stay at The Edward, it has retained its old world charm and character with all the modern conveniences. Beautiful views of the ocean, exceptionally comfortable king sized beds and polite, efficient and friendly staff. Although this area is quite "touristy" it was easy to Uber to the more trendy restaurants.
