I've stayed at dozens of hostels this year and this one was by far my favorite. The rooms are individually designed and are very comfortable. The bathrooms are modern and clean and the kitchen area is very big. There is wifi, however you do have to pay to use it (there are ways to get some free access). The staff... More

Staff were helpful, room (single), bathrooms and common areas were all very clean. Conveniently located around the corner from uShaka Marine World and the beach front and safe enough to walk to both (Lonely Planet Guide isn't accurate with their review). I stayed a Saturday night, which was fairly noisy with the rooftop bar and the open plan layout of... More

Hi Aussie_Nia, Thank you for taking the time out to review our lodge, I have to also thank you for your positive comments on the surrounding area and pointing out that Lonely Planet is out dated and inaccurate. Next time you stay with us we insist that you come up to the bar and have even better stay than the... More

Happy Hippo is perhaps one of the nicest hostels I've stayed in. Affordable, clean and well situated. The staff were also friendly and helpful. It is a stone's throw from uShaka Marine World which houses a number of different restaurants. This also means that it is 5-10 minute walk to the beach. In terms of transport options, there is a... Wow, thank you Abbie! Thank you for such a wonderful review and taking the time out to write it! It is especially lovely that you have mentioned the safety of the area, as this stigma is taking such a long time to wear off as it was the old harbour/industrial area. It is also great how you point out pertinent... More

I arrived to happy hippos at night, and the staff (young lady) at the reception wasn't very helpful. She didn't gave any kind of information (showing around the place, code for the door...etc) They don't give u key for the dorm, make sure your money is with u all the time (the guy who i stayed with in the hostel... Hi Erus128, It is with great sadness that I return from my travels and see your review. It is never very nice to be referred to as average. But I see your point and I am addressing them as we speak. The lady who greeted you on your first night has been with us just over a month, we thought... More

I recently stayed at Happy Hippo for 2 nights. The location is great-right next to Ushaka marine world with tons to do and good shopping etc. The girls at reception were lovely and helped me plan my full day safari only one day prior! They also told me about a gym (Train) a 5 minute walk from the backpackers where... More

Hi Jenna, Thank you so much for the great review! It seems that you enjoyed a lot of the facilities that our area provides, probably more so than most people, and I am very pleased that someone has gone out and utilised them. Next time you are in Durban it would be a real pleasure to host you again. Kind... More

The place itself is nice, although the area is dangerous - near the harbour and the notorious Point/Mahatma Gandhi Road. So stay in at night unless you're prepared to spend money on a cab. It is much more expensive than other backpackers - they charge b&b rates for private rooms, and their dorms are more expensive too. There were only... More

Mazi-Wazi, Thank you for taking the time out to make a review that is factually incorrect and unnecessarily untrue. We are in an area that is statistically the safest in the province of Kwa-Zulu Natal. There are also bars and restaurants within walking distance, so why would you tell people to stay in? To say we are much more expensive... More

I stayed twice at the happy hippo, once for business and once as a backpacker. Both the private rooms and the dorms are really comfortable and spacious and what I think is great value for money. Private rooms have plenty of character and the whole place was very very clean! Both times there was a great crowd and always interesting... More

Friendly smiles await u as u enter by reception. Fantastic service. I felt relaxed in my room with no disturbance at any time. The bar area was great. Chico was always at my side when he was needed. Very close to restaurants and night life. Safe and affordable.
