Ive stayed in lots of backpackers in many countries and can deal with a bit of grime. I'm not even grossed out by the odd Cockroach, but this place is another level! !!!!! Do not stay here. Rats. Cockroaches. Stained sheets. Filth everywhere. Terrible smell. Didn't even want to cook anything because kitchen was filthy and rats running across the... More

We slept here for 1 night, then we decided we just couldnt stay. The linnens were dirty, there was blood on them. And the staff refused to give us new ones. The showers/toilets were also very dirty and it was extremely loud during the night..!!!!!!

I"ve stayed at many backpackets the breadth & width of Africa. This the worst - hands down! Do not stay here. I cant begin to describe how bad it is! The cockroaches are treated better than guests. Probably why there are more cockroaches than gursts! you know you've made a big mistake when you see all the "no refund" signs... More

I stayed at Banana Backpackers as it was recommended in the Coast to Coast book. I stayed in the dorm and to my surprise we were unable to shut our door AT ALL without locking the deadbolt. This meant either locking other people in the room or locking them out of the room. The next thing that I disliked was... More

I recently attended UIA 2014 in Durban, which is an international architecture event. Majority of the students were to stay here as it was affordable and near the Durban ICC. It is nothing like the photo's and frankly disgusting. The mattress one sleeps on is so hard and thin. We were told we would be booked in rooms with our... More

In December 2013 I started my Tour with "Baz Bus" in Durban. Since Banana works together with Baz Bus and due to its location in the centre of Durban, I chose to stay there. It was rainy, so the whole Building was cold and wet. The Bathrooms were really not clean and the kitchen hasn't been cleaned for long -... More

Stayed briefly and went to another hostel. Just a few things that I haven't seen mentioned: - This backpackers is located on the first floor of a rather dilapidated 4 or 5 story building. There is a brothel called "Sonja's Escorts" on the ground floor, which should give you an idea of the area. - One of the staff members... More

When we first arrived here it looked really nice, there is a nice "courtyard" where you can sit and braai. But then we went to our room... we did not know that we had signed up for the Nelson Mandela Experience.. Our room was 5 or 6 square meters, no window and a sliding door wing a hanging lock.. yep... Spent there few days in a 8 bed room with access to Balcony and payed 120 R each. Close to city center and main amenities. Less than 20 min by walk from the beach. Good staff and basic facilities. Met really nice and easy going travelers from all over the world.
