Our visit at the hostel was great. We arrived relatively late in the evening after a long trip and were impressed by the efficiency at which the host had us settled. The next morning we had a good breakfast and even felt very welcomed by Jayson and Vaughn. The room was clean and we experienced no backlog in terms of... More

I stayed for 2 nights and I thought the hostel was great. Good beds, decent showers, very well equipped kitchen, pool and an awesome location in party place Melville. It has a new owner and although he was still getting into his new business he tried to assist us in any way possible. He called us taxi's, gave us advice... More

I only stayed one night and met some really nice people, but I have to say the service left a lot to be desired! Firstly, my dorm bed was so dirty - full of food! Not even exaggerating, there were pieces of what looked like chocolate all over the sheet and pillow. I did tell the guy in charge in... More

Melville Backpackers located on 1st avenue was all right for us. I mean, we came from Bez Valley, where according to some it's "hella dangerous" and according to others it's "lovely".Weird. Melville's wasn't packed as we thought it would be, the location is perfect and let me tell you why: it's situated in one of the nicest areas (being a... More

A prefect location and was safe to walk around at night, a large Spar supermarket was a 5 minute walk away and a 10 minute walk away from 7th avenue strip with plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from. Hostel was clean, quiet and the people where friendly. We would not recommend camping as it was on wooden slats... More

Melville in fact is a nice place and has everything you need, but the Hostel is not prepared for the winter in Joburg. We had electricity problems and no heating. It had 0 degrees outside and inside the house as well as the little hut we stayed in. The people were friendly and the price okay, but I would just... More

Arriving late and being lost, we rang to the door at this hostel when Jeffrey appeared and was of great help for us. He called up our hostel which was in the neighbourhood, he even offered himself to bring us there by car and he was all the highest kindness though we weren't going to spend our stay by them.... Melville International Backpackers is a really nice place. Very quiet and happy people! There is a pool, a roof top and the free wifi. The room was good. There is some places around for food and everything. Thanks!

I challenge you to find another safe, clean bed in Johannesburg for $15. I arrived at the airport at 10pm and the transfer I had ordered was on time waiting for me, a great comfort for my first visit to a city known for violent crime. Inside, my single bed in the girls' dorm was large and comfortable, with clean... More

Good for the price. The owner was very helpful with advice for what to see and do and how to do it. The wifi was not very good though. The area seemed pretty safe but you still have to be careful. I took a cab there for 480 rand, so arrange a shuttle from the airport.
