The hostel is in an ok condition, the outside shower is the better shower if you are staying in the dorms. However, the people are incredibly friendly that run this establishment. Close to stores and in a relatively safe urban area

Shared a 10 man dorm room with 3 friends and some other random people. Aside from the somewhat load snorring and the limited breakfast options I has a great time here! Other guests were very friendly and there was a pretty open and relaxed atmosphere present. The staff was keen to give us tips as to where to go for... More

Nice cheap place to stay with good beds, nice pool area, hot showers and an extremely funny owner. Stayed for 3 nights. They offer a simple but necessary breakfast for free and we felt very safe here. Definitely recommended!

There's a lot to be said for this backpackers. Fantastically central location in a relatively safe suburb of Johannesburg. The staff were extremely kind and obliging. We had to change the booking and leave a day early, and they handled this without any fuss. The property feels secure, with a high wall and standard Johannesburger electric fence surrounding. The room... More

Our visit at the hostel was great. We arrived relatively late in the evening after a long trip and were impressed by the efficiency at which the host had us settled. The next morning we had a good breakfast and even felt very welcomed by Jayson and Vaughn. The room was clean and we experienced no backlog in terms of... More

I stayed for 2 nights and I thought the hostel was great. Good beds, decent showers, very well equipped kitchen, pool and an awesome location in party place Melville. It has a new owner and although he was still getting into his new business he tried to assist us in any way possible. He called us taxi's, gave us advice... More

I only stayed one night and met some really nice people, but I have to say the service left a lot to be desired! Firstly, my dorm bed was so dirty - full of food! Not even exaggerating, there were pieces of what looked like chocolate all over the sheet and pillow. I did tell the guy in charge in... More

Melville Backpackers located on 1st avenue was all right for us. I mean, we came from Bez Valley, where according to some it's "hella dangerous" and according to others it's "lovely".Weird. Melville's wasn't packed as we thought it would be, the location is perfect and let me tell you why: it's situated in one of the nicest areas (being a... More

A prefect location and was safe to walk around at night, a large Spar supermarket was a 5 minute walk away and a 10 minute walk away from 7th avenue strip with plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from. Hostel was clean, quiet and the people where friendly. We would not recommend camping as it was on wooden slats... More

Melville in fact is a nice place and has everything you need, but the Hostel is not prepared for the winter in Joburg. We had electricity problems and no heating. It had 0 degrees outside and inside the house as well as the little hut we stayed in. The people were friendly and the price okay, but I would just... More
