We had heard many great things about Brown Sugar, especially on TA. But sadly we were quite disappointed. While the location and manor itself is amazing and very inviting, the hostel felt quite hostile. Front desk and kitchen staff were not very helpful and awkward at best. There are rules EVERYWHERE, typed out in bold capital letters to remind you... More

Great place to stay in Joburg! Very clean and relaxing with awesome common areas like the bar and pool. Very well managed and they offer a shuttle service to common places of interest around the area. Will definitely stay again.

I was worried about finding a Hostel in Johannesburg because of many place with bad rewies. But i couldnt be happier for choosing Brown Sugar. Its an amazin hostel with pool, bar, recreative areas and its very secure. We had lot of advice from the staff to places to go and how to get there and also made a lot... More

Brown Sugar Backpackers is a safe oasis in the big, sprawling metropolis of Jo'berg which is not always nice. Brown Sugar offers real advise and precautions to their guests and a security which no price can be attached to. We stayed here after a previous backpackers facility proved to be quite seedy. Brown Sugar offers picks up from the airport... More

Stayed here couple of times during my trip. The atmosphere was friendly and the staff very helpful. My room was called "Glass" and had a glass ceiling and it was relaxing to watch the sky before falling into sleep. Very nice :) Only thing to note was that the noice (one night there was a party) from the common room... More

A lovely layout for a hostel but wasting its potential. First impression as I stepped in the door after a long days travelling was the front desk lady shouting down the phone to a potential customer.id hoped this was warranted but her attitude carried on every time I'd to deal with her,Very poor customer service and just had to stop... We had a twin room with shared bathroom. Both quite basic and with squeeky beds. But nonetheless very clean. The communal room was cozy and all food and drinks were easily available. Somewhat basic breakfast, but enough to start the day. Small parking lot though, as with many hostels in S-A. We also arrived late (11pm) (and mentioned that with... More

Our bedroom was off the car park and had it's own bath/shower room. There was a heater and blankets if we needed them. Free Wi-Fi was available upstairs in the computer area next to the bar and the bar area was comfy with sofa's and a fire and a very International feel. The drinks in the bar area were very... More

I am sorry that you had a bad experience in Soweto but we clearly mention in our tour package description brochures, the following: We will stop at an informal settlement where you will have the opportunity to walk and talk with the poor local people and their children in the streets. See a traditional “Shebeen” (drinking place) and enter one... More
