A lovely layout for a hostel but wasting its potential. First impression as I stepped in the door after a long days travelling was the front desk lady shouting down the phone to a potential customer.id hoped this was warranted but her attitude carried on every time I'd to deal with her,Very poor customer service and just had to stop... We had a twin room with shared bathroom. Both quite basic and with squeeky beds. But nonetheless very clean. The communal room was cozy and all food and drinks were easily available. Somewhat basic breakfast, but enough to start the day. Small parking lot though, as with many hostels in S-A. We also arrived late (11pm) (and mentioned that with... More

Our bedroom was off the car park and had it's own bath/shower room. There was a heater and blankets if we needed them. Free Wi-Fi was available upstairs in the computer area next to the bar and the bar area was comfy with sofa's and a fire and a very International feel. The drinks in the bar area were very... More

I am sorry that you had a bad experience in Soweto but we clearly mention in our tour package description brochures, the following: We will stop at an informal settlement where you will have the opportunity to walk and talk with the poor local people and their children in the streets. See a traditional “Shebeen” (drinking place) and enter one... More

Wonderful converted mafia mansion with pool and pool table! outdoor terrace, wifi, friendly bar and staff who cook for you. free inward airport transfer was a mice touch and the return was cheap and easy to organise. Friendly staff served up a great traditional dinner and buffet breakfast only downside is as its a beautiful mansion, its not too central...they... More

Thank you for the review and staying with us. The public transport in Joburg is not the greatest and meter taxi's is expensive. We have cheap public transport 200 meters from the gate for about R10 per trip to the CBD. We offer the same rates to the local shops on our small local map for all our guests. We... More

I stayed here for 4 days. I ate here every evening for 70R, good food. The room was a single room, kind of bungelow in the garden. Clean! A shared bathroom, also good! Breakfast was nice, room was nice...especially the wall with statements! WiFi was good, only not in own room. They do have laptops for use! They have also... More

Thank you for staying with us. We have a hotspot at the back of the property that covers the whole area up to the swimming pool. Maybe you just did not see it and we use the same login code as the main Wi-Fi. More

The hostel is a good place if you just need a place to sleep. The place feels safe and the common room is cosy. The bar is ok. The beds are ok but the rooms are a bit narrow. The view of Joburg by night from the balcony is amazing. By the way, the swimming pool is cool!

It was our first stay in Joburg and honestly it was just perfect! Brown Sugar has a free pickup from the airport and that just set the quality of the rest of our stay. We were only two and put in a private room with room for 4. Super chill welcome and tour through the hostel, we were explained all... More

Thank you for the nice review. We actually had a record month in October 2014 and you must have checked in just after everybody left or just before they arrived. I agree that it is much more fun with more guests around because Brown Sugar is such a huge place that we can have 40 guests but they are spread... More

We stayed here at the beginning and end of our trip to South Africa.we got picked up on arrival at the airport by the hostel's transport. We used their transport to go all over and felt in good hands (station and shopping mall). The girls at the reception were very kind to us. Breakfast was a bit scarce. The heating... More

we stayed here for two nights. the attraction was the airport pick up, well done :) they have everything you need and the staff were always so friendly and helpful and it was in a nice area. The hostel could have been a little cleaner and the breakfast wasn't up to much, but cannot argue with the price paid :)... More

Thank you for the review. The Southern Hemisphere countries have more sunny and warmer days then the Northern Hemisphere and that is why we do not specialize in central heating. We have however invested in panel wall heaters this year to improve on the heating. We have warm blankets and duvets in all the rooms and we dress warm inside... More
