I chose the Smiling Bear because of my conversation with Darlene, the owner. She is charming, friendly and a true promoter of the Alaskan experience. Room was clean, cozy, and comfortable. Meals were great and Darlene was very accomidating. she is a wealth of information about Kodiak. We went on a hike that she recommended and it was fantastic. Kodiak... More

She feeds you breakfast very well too. The location is private and quiet. It is also close to the ocean. We were able to use the kitchen and bar b que for our dinners. You will like the Smiling Bear. Give Darlene a call.

We spent 4 wonderful nights at "A Smiling Bear B&B" in June 2014. Everything was perfect. Darlene was a gracious host. The breakfasts were superb. Darlene is very knowledgeable about the island of Kodiak. She helped us see the interesting sites on the island. Also recommended some great fishing charters and bear watching flights. There were four of us. We... More

The room was perfect, Darlene was perfect, breakfast was perfect, and Misty was perfect. Everything about this place is awesome. The only think I was disappointed with was the fact that you really cant use that awesome bathtub because the water pressure will not fill it quickly enough. Otherwise, we loved everything. Would definitely recommend.

After 28 years in Alaska we finally made it to Kodiak. I booked 4 nights at he Smiling Bear and was really glad I did. We were traveling with friends and the set up perfectly accommodated our 4 person group. The rooms were well set up, modern, and clean. The grounds were beautiful too. With all of this in mind... What a wonderful place to stay. Darlene was a wonderful host. The house is open and inviting. A nice deck to sit and lounge outside and enjoy the beautiful weather. A short walk to a beach where we watched otters play in the water and whales feeding. She helped us with directions to find sea glass and recommended places to... More

A multitude of thanks to Darlene who made our trip to Kodiak a pleasant and lasting memory. Last minute plans got us to Kodiak and we found Darlene's A Smiling Bear B&B on the internet with rave reviews, only one night was available. We landed on the island after several attempts due to dense fog. We could not have been... More

Thank you for the great review Donna. I loved having you and your son, Emanuel, as guests at A Smiling Bear. I learned so much about NY City and how very hard the public employees had to work after Sandy. You are one of the un-sung hero's. All the best in your future adventures. More

Darlene is amazing! Her cooking is fabulous! Her home is CLEAN! Darlene goes above and beyond. We stayed in town at a B&B on the return from Shuyack Island in order to catch a flight back. Our flight was going to possibly be delayed until the next day and would need to stay another night. Even though we would be... More

Amazing hospitality; nothing too much trouble. Darlene was ready with a fantastic breakfast at whatever hour; cooked an excellent dinner (with equally excellent wine) on her own initiative one night, and the other happily ran us into town to a restaurant in her own car (she also took us to collect our rental car on another occasion). We felt like... More
