We have stayed in other historical accommodation in Alaska. It is usually quite nice to see these links to the past. In this case, we were rather disappointed. Peeling paint, bad smells, and bad maintenance are really not necessary to suggest age.

No WiFi, and there was plenty of stair climbing. The building is old. But I will tell you that I enjoyed staying here. The welcome at check-in was friendly and helpful. I needed help with printing a boarding pass, and the customer service was all I could ask for. The restaurant is a must-try while in Haines. Every bite of... More

I found myself hungry, with about an hour before I had to get on the ferry back to Skagway and I happened upon this great little bar and restaurant in the old Fort Seward buildings. The bartender, Candace, was very friendly and made a great mojito with fresh mint, which I did not expect to find in rural Alaska. I... More

A fairly quaint hotel with the most friendly people you will ever meet. We met Jeff (possibly the owner), and he couldn't be more accomodating. Along with the bartender we had, Candace. I could not have had a better stay. These owners know how to make their guests feel comfortable!!!

If you’re lucky enough to visit Alaska, I highly recommend visiting Haines. I visited on a SouthEast Alaska Trip with Off The Beaten Path and it was awesome. It’s definitely a small small town, but great to see for Bear Watching, River Rafting (as in flat river rafting) as well as just to experience a quaint small town in Alaska.... More

We have stayed in this hotel for one night. The room was very shabby and way overpriced. They have also charged us extra than we have booked the hotel for. Only after arguing for several minutes did unwilling lady reimbursed extra charges. I would not recommend this hotel. The service and the interior equals to motel class.

Best kept secret in North America. Great fishing, arts and music scene, spectacular scenery and a wonderful brewery. The Halsingland was great and gloomy--but perfect! I shall return. Walkable to the art museum, bookstore, brewery, shops, a cool playground for our kids--and great views from everywhere.

This is the second time I've stayed at this hotel. It is an older hotel originally part of the Fort Seward complex in Haines. If you are expecting modern accommodations this is not the place for you. The rooms are large but comfortable and some updates have been added. The rooms are clean and although there is no laundry available... More

there are two parts to Haines - one is the old Fort Seward and the other is the town of Haines. The Fort is a neat little historic area on a hill facing the water where the cruise ships come in once a week and where a fast passenger ferry docks. there are several white buildings around a grassy square... The staff is very friendly and wonderfully accommodating. The rooms - and the hotel itself - has a very cozy, vintage, small town feel. The Fort Seward location is ideal; it's within walking distance to everywhere you might want to go in Haines. No, these are not luxury accommodations, but that is not what we were expecting. In fact, the... More
