visiting from the states for the first time I did not know what to expect from the backpackers hostel, but I have to say I am impressed with the service and cleanliness of the place. I was unable to reserve through the online website because I waited until the last minute ( same day). However, the owner confirmed via email,... More

This is my second time at Costa Rica Backpackers. They have a nice garden with a swimming pool. You can use the kitchen and if you don't know how to cook, they have a restaurant and a bar. They also have free wifi and computers! And also information and contacts for daily tours and transport!

This place is a dump, do not stay here. We stayed for one night passing through San Jose and it was just gross. The food from the bar was average at best. The bathrooms are disgusting with only a plastic curtain for privacy in a public bathroom. When we went to bed we found a HUGE bed bug on the... More

Me and a friend stayed at this hostel for ten days. It was off season so it was fairly quiet. We met some really cool people and enjoyed buying food and cooking for ourselves in the hostel kitchen. The Wifi was mostly good, only went down a couple of times over the time we were there. The stuff were friendly.... More

Would only recommend this as a place to crash for a night or two if you are in transit or just passing through San Jose. Hopefully you are NOT spending more than a couple nights in San Jose anyway. We rented one of the rooms with a double bed. The mattress was pretty worn out and the room was very... More

Very cramped hostel rooms, with no hanging space in the showers. You get a bit of hot water in the afternoon. Excellent location, great cooking options BUT our food was taken every night so don't expect to have your breakfast there in the morning. Cheap beer, and the noise was actually quite minimal. Would recommend.

Rooms are like the bowel of a ship no ventilation and only window is to the corridor, it has a nice chill out Zone with a pool and a bar which is good. I wouldn't stay here again as it is dangerous and even the front door is a massive metal cage you have to ring a buzzer for. It's... More

Our rooms are big and comfortable. We have rooms with garden and pool view. Dangerous?? We are one block away from the National Police Building and two blocks away from the Supreme Court of Costa Rica. Dangerous? Seriously?! All houses in Costa Rica have gates, even the little ones and for no reason that means insecure. More

Even after claiming several times for hot water at the reception, the hot water never came. A lot of traffic noise during the week (OK during weekends). Railway nearby, sounds like a train is going to rush through your room in the early morning. The open kitchen and bar are OK and a good spot to meet people. Rooms OK,... More

It's a decent hostel. Pretty close to the local markets and in a safe area. Has a bar and a restaurant along with a cool chilling area with a big pool. The wifi is pretty spotty. Free coffee in the mornings. Has a big tv with movies playing all day. The dorms were underground (had windows but still underground) and... More

Thank you so much for you review! We have beautiful rooms with garden views and also another area with cozy, silent rooms. The ones "underground" as you call them are the ones people prefer because are more private and silent More
