For me, Costa Rica Backpackers is more like a well-prices hotel as opposed to a hostel. The amenities are great, especially the large pool and garden area! The restaurant on property is also wonderful--delicious food for a great price! I recommend the pancakes and the chicken kebab. What impressed me most about Backpackers is there is staff constantly cleaning and... More

Costa Rica Backpackers is by far the best place to stay in the city! Definitely a backpacker hostel, so its really easy to meet fellow travelers here! It is located in a great location walking distance to all of the main attractions (parks, museums, national theater, etc.) but not located DIRECTLY downtown where it can get a bit sketchy at... More

When arriving in San José, this is a nice and cheap option. Clean room, very nice garden with pool and hammocks, spacious kitchen, nice bar and restaurant and shuttle to and from the airport. The service was not too good though; rude guy at the reception when we arrived, no apologies or explanation when the shuttle van didn't show up... More

Great chill place with cool staff to stay in San Jose. We stayed here for 2 nights the beginning of our trip and then another night before we headed to La Fortuna. Not much to do around the area though so I would stay at the hostel at night. We had a private room. Double 8. Comfortable and clean but... More

From the outside, you would never guess what´s inside.....a hidden Oasis. Beautiful garden with hammocks, a small pool, chill out areas, book exchange, bar, cafe, free internet on computers, free wifi, TV with films in the evening and a kitchen area. The kitchen is spoilt by the fact that many people don´t clear up and there is a lack of... More

I would like mention the positives at this place. The bed was surprisingly comfortable and the area by the pool and kitchen were kept fairly clean. Also, Justin in the tour area was very helpful. Unfortunately the negatives out way the positives on this one. They scheduled a shuttle for me and sent an email saying that if its more... More

Stayed here 4 times over 15 months in CA great place to stop & chill for a day or 2 on your way to somewhere else. Dorms are ok but the bunks are a little rickety. Great vibe from employees though owner employs the typical French standoffish attitude. Good restaurant & bar. Overall it's very good & where I'll stay... More

Spent a night here as a transit stop to panama and wasn't too bad. Decent kitchen and free coffee plus nice social spaces to relax. Noisy bar area late at night, which echoes down the corridor to dorms below, but didn't mind this for one night only!

I was arriving at 2 am from panama and specifically contacted the hostel to find out if they had someone at front desk at that hour and they replied that they are open 24/7. when I arrived the gate was closed and I was told that there was no one to take me in. not cool guys!

The staff here were decent. The garden was very comfortable and laid back with hammocks and such. The kitchen was nice to have but it could be difficult to get some space in during peak hours. My partner is gluten free and the kitchen was pretty dirty on a regular basis. Our room was in decent shape and clean. The... More
