Okay, I love nature but this was down right CREEPY... How about having some live plants and not all the dead ones? The place was way too dark and spooky looking. The rooms felt muggy and the bathroom was pretty nasty. I basically thought it was a major dump; dirty, tacky, and downright horrific. The breakfast was a joke...what type... more

If you want to wake up to birds in the midst of a very noisy city, be surrounded by colorful art, plants and animals, have personalized attention, and be within walking distance of almost everything you could want to see and do including eating, then we recommend this for you. Mayra is fascinating. Breakfast isn't a reason to stay here,... more

My 10 year old son and I had a wonderful stay at this quaint and quirky bed and breakfast when spent the night in San Jose on our way to surf in Nosara. My son and I are both nature lovers and Mayra's magical oasis in the city was the perfect place for us. Mayra arranged for us to be... more

I was really excited about my stay at this hotel after reading reviews about this place. It is in a nice location - walking distance to the main section with shops, National Theater, etc. The plants and flowers and birds and bats in the evening were really lovely as well. The room left a bit to be desired though. The... more

Mayra is a true Costa Rican gem, as is her bed and breakfast. This was the perfect oasis for my friend and I to stay at as we crisscrossed the country using San Jose as our base. I LOVED the funky artwork and being literaly surrounded by nature. In addition to a great place to stay, Mayra has wonderful suggestions... more

Cinco Hormigas Rojas is a most unusual hotel in a lovely and safe section of San Jose. The proprietor, Mayra Guell, is marvelously attentive. The experience is well worth the price. more

Beautiful wonderful place! We stayed here a few times, as a base in the middle of Costa Rica. The owner Mayra is lovely, she is very helpful, ask her anything and she will arrange it. Mayra cares about nature, she even has a colourful garden with a varierty of birds, butterflies and bates. The place is like a extended home... more

If you have a heart for critters and creatures, trees and plants, or if you have an artistic spirit, you'll probably feel at home here. You'll enjoy the diversity of wildlife squeezed into the city garden. While the place is certainly not a palace, it provides for you a relatively quiet, restful little haven in the midst of bustling, noisy,... more

Lonely planet's review of this place is so far off the writer should be fired. An "artist's refuge" this place is not, unless you mean a museum of ugly and tacky. the entire place is covered in ugly multi-colored junk, including the toilet seats, which only makes the small dirty rooms all the more unbearable. It is UGLY, DIRTY, SMELLY,... more

We stayed with Mayra at the beginning of our three week trip in Costa Rica. She arranged a late night airport pickup for us, accommodated my nephew (last minute) who was on a trip through Central America and happened to be in San Jose at the same time and she was helpful and friendly at all times. We really enjoyed... more
