The Don Carlos is a decent option for staying a night in downtown San Jose. It's conveniently located very close to most of the highlights of the city - we did a 2-hour walking tour on our own and saw everything we were interested in seeing (the Jade Museum is right across the street, and we walked to the National... We stayed at The Hotel Don Carlos on two separate nights. Once in the middle of our Costa Rica road trip, once at the very end. For us, it was great. This isn’t the Bellagio, but, it was not one bit a disappointment. Hotel Don Carlos is a friendly unique character hotel with a huge gift shop frequented by tour... More

We stayed 1 night at Don Carlos and it was fine. Clean rooms with good furniture, and nice communal area and restaurant. Not flash but does the job if you are just looking for a place to stopover in SJ

We visit Costa Rica quite often. Always hearing how wonderful Hotel Don Carlos was. We decided to stay at the hotel. Much to our sadness we did. We have always had a wonderful time in Costa Rica...until our stay here. We used the in room safe which used your room key for locking. We also made the mistake of taking... More

After many recommendations on TripAdvisor and Fodor , we chose this place because of it's true Costa Rican qualities. Older, in downtown with character it was.....comfort and best of service it was not. The front desk was helpful, but we waited 2 hrs. for a small meal at dinner time (only one person waiting 6 tables and perhaps doing some... More

I spent a good amount of time searching for a hotel in San Jose, Costa Rica. I always find the hardest picking a hotel when I travel. Main reason is that I've never been there before and I have no idea what to expect of the hotel. When I found Don Carlos, their webiste was very impressive. It's always up... More

I stayed at this hotel for 1 week as part of a business trip. I wanted to avoid a large high rise and go for something with a bit more character. The Don Carlos does not disappoint! The staff are all incredibly helpful and polite. The free breakfast of fruit, toast and hot stuff like eggs, sausages and the CR... More

Charming place. Decorated nicely. Beds are a bit old. Staff is nice and English speaking. Bar was severely understaffed. One guy making drinks, bussing the tables, taking orders. Poor fellow. We stayed there because our tour picks up at that hotel. My advice is to NEVER stay in downtown San Jose especially if you are driving yourself. Navigating the town... More

We just returned home from a week in Costa Rica and we stayed at the Hotel Don Carlos in downtown San Jose: [--] It is on a quieter street and it is small (36 rooms) but full of character place You will easily stay under your budget with rooms in the $70-90 price range. The hotel was a former presidential... More

Had a great stay at the Don Carlos, nice comfortable and spacious clean room in hotel with a welcome drink, free parking and great morning breakfast all included in rate. I would definitely recommend staying here, you are in the heart of San Jose and have 24 hr access to the locked covered secured parking garage and excellent service, free... More
