Spent 2 nights in this hotel and found it ok for my needs, even if ver basic. Very close to downtown San Jose, in the Barrio Amon which is a lovely, upmarket suburb with interesting buildings and art galleries. The room I was in - 21 - was very noisy because just above reception and meeting point, so ask for... More

My wife and I stayed at Don Carlos hotel many, many times. We have visited Costa Rica for about 10 years to get away from Massachusetts winters. The people are great; always willing to help. The food in the restaurant is typical Costa Rica - lots of rice and beans, and always fresh fruit. On one trip we stayed for... More

We stayed in room 29 and had a nice view of the mountains and some of the city. The hotel was in walking distance to downtown and was in a nice neigborhood. The room was spacious and bed was comfortable. The hotel is a work of art and the staff were friendly and most helpful. Would defiently stay here again... More

We have stayed at the Don Carlos hotel three times and found this beautiful old mansion filled with artworks a wonderful experience each time. Mr Steve and the rest of staff are very helpful, the breakfast tasty, the rooms clean and comfortable. Looking forward to next trip to Costa Rica and this delightful hotel. Lawrence and Patricia. We concluded our trip to Costa Rica with a stay in San Jose as we had an early flight out the last day. Our booking service booked us a night in the Hotel Don Carlos, an historic hotel. The man at the front desk was very nice and helpful. We had a room on the main floor accessed off the... More

I have stayed at this hotel two times, each on the tail end of a visit to other areas of Costa Rica. It's so much more fun to stay in the city, and the prices are comparable with the airport hotels. It's very walkable to museums and parks in San Jose, and the rooms are clean and spacious. The food... More

We stayed here a few times 9-10 years ago and were pleased with the service. Glad to come back again recently and discover that the service is still reliable as before. Rooms are pretty standard, but clean and well appointed. But the great things about Don Carlos are: (1) The service - every time we have stayed here (and even... More

The place was clean and interesting but the food and rooms were overpriced ! I was not happy with a meal and they refused to take it off the bill ! They made a big deal about arraigning a taxi for "our safety" and to get us to the exact location and the driver had to call to get directions... More

We stayed here for two nights on arrival in Costa Rica. It is well situated for the city centre but in a quiet street (except for some demolition works opposite!). There is a great owner/manager who does everything he can to help. Perhaps a little dark inside, but that can be a welcome relief from the heat.

Wonderful breakfast. Very comfortable room. Had to climb lots of stairs though. But great staff to help with luggage. And had free private parking and wi fi for guests. Despite great reviews of gift shop, I found it over priced with few local items.
