It's difficult for me to believe, as someone who's made many trips to CR, that this hotel isn't higher ranked in the San Jose listings. It has great local flavor without sacrificing anything-- the rooms are very comfortable and ample, the front desk very friendly and the restaurant food is tasty and satisfying. The lobby and courtyard area are rather... More

Adequate Hotel Don Carlos, San Jose We knew that we were only staying for one night, at the start of our holiday to Costa Rica- so weren't looking for much. We wanted somewhere close to the airport (20 minutes) that was clean and tidy - which it was. A note of caution - If you're travelling as a family -... More

Only stayed at this hotel for one night before moving on. But we found the room to comfortable if a little dark. Staff were welcoming which was very nice after almost 24hrs travelling. Breakfast provided was excellent.

Candidly, we chose the Hotel Don Carlos for the price, which was about $100. But after they charged us $113 to park our car, the price didn't seem so good. The restaurant/bar was good. The mattresses were horrible. Everybody woke up with stiff backs.

We stopped at Hotel Don Carlos as a stop on a city tour. Fortunately the hotel had beautiful Christmas decorations for the season but otherwise it would not have been very noteworthy. There was a nice but pricey gift shop.

I've been visiting Costa Rica for more than 20 years, initially to study Spanish at Conversa in Santa Ana in 1995. My daughter and I stayed at this charming boutique hotel for 3 nights before returning to the states. WE LOVED IT. Then my wife and I stayed here at the end of our total country visit. Unlike most "2nd... More

This hotel is built in old colonial style and has a real welcoming feel about it. Set in the centre of old town nothing is too far to walk and felt safe even at night. The hotel has a cosy feel about it with lots of antiques and objects de art scattered around. The room was clean of a good... More

The hotel is conveniently located to the major sites in San Jose and has free parking in a secure area. The rooms are all different and there are a lot of interesting features in the hotel (tile work, statutes, old machines, etc.). The room were clean, but the sheets were worn thin, the pillows were old and stained, the bedspread... More

Don Carlos is a charming colonial style hotel which has been made by joining three century old town houses together. It has an old world charm about it that would be hard to beat with enclosed atriums and a collection of art and artifacts to match the surroundings. The rooms were of adequate size and were clean. The situation is... More

I expected more from this place so I was disappointed by my experience there. With the exception of Steve, the night receptionist, don't come here for great service. Here are some of the issues I experienced: On arrival, I was shown to a very dark room with no external window (there was a window facing the wall of the small... More
