Look, I wasn't a huge fan of San Jose. I'm glad I experienced it once but I don't have much desire to go back. That said, I'd consider going back just so I could stay at Hotel Don Carlos again. Located in a quiet, less touristy neighborhood, this hotel has got to be the best place to stay in all... more
The rooms are nice - more boutique style than McRooms at the Holiday Inn and such... and the staff is extremely helpful and friendly (like most Costa Ricans). The neighborhood the Don Carlos is in is one of the nicer neighborhoods with lots of old-school colonial architecture. It's also right next to Las Palmas Grill, an EXCELLENT Peruvian restaurant. The... more
We spent one night with our three children (all under the age of 10) on our way out of CR. The hotel is like an art gallery with a super inexpensive restaurant. It's across the street from museums and in walking distance to markets to pick up souvenirs on your way out. The room was huge and super comfortable. The... more
We stayed at Hotel Don Carlos on our first and last night in Costa Rica. 04/09/09 and 04/17/09. We stayed in San Jose thinking that a big city would have a lot to offer, we were wrong, the only positive of our stay was Hotel Don Carlos, we pulled up to a beautifully decorated old style hotel with art and... more
We were greeted by Allan who was so helpful (and spoke English). Everyone working at the hotel was extremely helpful. The hotel is centrally located, being in walking distance to a number of tasty restaurants and things to do and see. We stayed here on our first night in Costa Rica and it was a great place to get integrated... more
The interior of this hotel is gorgeous!! The rooms might not be anything really special, but they are clean, with hot water, and everything you need. Breakfast in the morning is quite delicious... what a spread! The entire staff is very friendly and helpful; they will go out of their way to make sure your stay is pleasant. This is... more
Don Carlos Hotel was authentic, located in a good part of San Jose, and the staff was very helpful and friendly. We opted for a "Superior room" which was located on the 3rd floor overlooking the city. The view was breathtaking, and the hotel was clean. However the minus of the hotel was the noise, the set up of the... more
We reserved a room at Don Carlos for our last night in CR. First impression; it was beautiful, we were greeted by the security guard who guided us to the front desk. From there we were checked in by a gentlemen named Pedro, who couldn't have been more helpful or kind. The room was small, but lovely. The decor fit... more
Strayed in this cosy cheerful little hotel 3 x 1 nights during our trip in Costa Rica. The hotel is located in the middle of the San Jose downtown, but still it is very quit and save. This is not an international luxury hotel. Local hotel with A LOT of charm. All the room are decorated in local stile and... more
