The staff was very welcoming, the atmosphere was comfortable and beautiful, and the food didn't dissapoint. I had a wide range of choices that was hard to choose from. They have options for everyone which was good for my dinner. Their brunch is also amazimg. Perfect to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful garden and sun before the day.

I stayed at Casa Ridgway for a few weeks and enjoyed the atmosphere, employees attitude and met some very interesting travelers. Thinkers over materialists. Casa is associated with a peace group. While breakfast is included, I also used the kitchen for lunch or dinner. Had the run of the place. Set up my own computer in the conference room. I... More

A nice place to be while you are in San Jose. Clean rooms, breakfast and a good location convenient to downtown. The staff is very kind and caring which means a lot...this accommodation is a non profit associated with a peace group. I would recommend it to people of all ages.

This is a great hostel if you want to relax from the buzz of San Jose. Its a big hostel with space and a great kitchen. Its situated close to the centre of town but is nestled away on a cul-de-sac and is therefore nice and quiet. The breakfast is an additional bonus. There are always people about to offer... More

I stayed here when I was a college student in January of 2007 (the drop down option wouldn't let me choose the right date). Even though I was in my 30's, I was a woman traveling alone and I was made to feel so welcome and safe. I loved the family atmosphere, how all the guests took turns cooking and... More

I first stayed here 10 years ago. Depending on the number and character of people there it can be very quiet or not. It is very basic but if you are a traveler you're not spending time in the room. I sent three requests for information on this trip, none of which were responded to. There are many other options... More

We spent 4 months all over central america in various hostels and guesthouses. Casa Ridgeway was one of the best budget places. Reliable hot showers (you actually had to turn it down - too hot at times!), clean linens, a clean kitchen and good beds. If you've stayed in hostels in central america, you'll know that these things are often... More

Casa Ridgway is wonderful! Lots of sleeping options to select from and inexpensive. PLUS! They do valuable service for their community including taking in refugees! I gladly would give them my business again! One of the managers Saidor was fantastic and cared for me like family. Willing to share information about local places. I did not even mention yet that... They always provide a good breakfast which includes fruit. a great way to start your day. Be prepared for an older building. Good... More

I have stayed at Casa Ridgeway over the years, every time I had to stay the night in San Jose. Although I still think it is a nice place, my most recent stay will be my last, however, as the new owner has made "policy" changes that made me feel less like a Friend and more like a client.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Casa Ridgway is a small guest house located in San Jose, Costa Rica. It is operated by the non-profit organization, Centro de los Amigos para la Paz (CAP, Center of Friends for Peace). We are situated on a quiet street near the center of town, conveniently located near many popular attractions and activities. The guest house offers private rooms and dormitory bedrooms with shared bathrooms, at modest prices. A communal kitchen and patio-dining area are available to all guests. A unique feature of our rooms is that they are each in the process of being dedicated to a peace activist. Some of these activists include: Archbishop Oscar Romero, Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Mother Teresa, Linus Pauling, Anne Frank, Chief Seattle, Aung San Sun Kyi, Leo Tolstoy, and George Bernard Shaw. In addition to supporting the operation of CAP, Casa Ridgway welcomes people from all over the world, and promotes peace through hospitality. ... more   less
